A struggling writer. A team of U.S. soldiers. A fight for their lives. A battle for his soul.
Writer Evan Davis desperately needs to find his muse to finish his book. As the impossible deadline approaches with a virtually nonexistent wordcount, his agent presents him with a unique reprieve: Gain a delay by becoming a press embed with U.S. troops going to Central Asia. Davis sees it as an unlikely place to rediscover his muse but lacks any alternative. After being presented with an odd luck talisman of three paperclips by a friend, he travels with his assigned unit to Afghanistan. There he is out of his comfort zone and pushed into a world where friendships are vital, and lives are on the line. His problems pale in comparison to what these brave men must face daily. As Davis begins to write about their daily hardships, he rediscovers his love of the written word. He also finds a use for each of his talismans, as they save his life and those of the men he comes to regard as his team; soldiers who promised each other they would all make it home in one piece.
Follow Evan’s journey as he finds his muse in the most unlikely place under the most extraordinary circumstances.
Three Paperclips & a Grey Scarf … where do I begin? Why don’t I start my review by writing that Three Paperclips & a Grey Scarf is a captivating and moving novel that should not be missed by any reader. When I read the description of Three Paperclips & a Grey Scarf I was hooked, after all, I love military/moving novels and love even more when they have a twist, so I was hooked and ready to go. However, when I started to read Three Paperclips & a Grey Scarf, I was shocked by just how good the literature and the story was and so I raced through this novel desperate to find out what would happen to the characters I was invested in. Now and then a reader will come across that one book that blows them away, it is a somewhat generic term, but that is what Three Paperclips & a Grey Scarf did to me… it blew me away and ever since completing it I have been thinking of its intricate and detailed story and how I need to re-read it!
Three Paperclips & a Grey Scarf is a sensational novel that will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the novel, Evan Davis, a writer with writer’s block who is struggling to find his muse to finish his work as well as reach his fast-approaching deadline. Evan’s agent, however, has a solution and suggests that he should travel to Afghanistan as press and embed himself within a military unit. Evan does just this as he does not have any other choice and although the thought of him, living with strangers in a war zone is scary, he grows to find friendships, his love of writing again and so much more and this book lovers is the premise of the incredible Three Paperclips & a Grey Scarf!
Three Paperclips & a Grey Scarf for me was thrilling, captivating, and addictive right from the start, and I felt this from beginning to end. Three Paperclips & a Grey Scarf was captivating to me from the start thanks to the unique premise of the story and the bewitching literature courtesy of the author, Sheldon Charles who hooked me with his unique story that was unlike anything I have read before. It is rare to find a moving military novel that still features other genres, and that to me was a breath of fresh air as so many novels these days seem similar!
Sheldon Charles is a phenomenal writer who knows how to grasp his reader’s attention from the first page. Charles instead of writing long, drawn-out builds up which are commonly found in many novels, decides to ditch this approach and thrust his reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach, what is the point of having a long build-up with little excitement? This is only necessary if the author in question can’t develop the characters in the story quickly, but with Charles, the reader will not encounter this issue because Charles instantly develops his characters and makes the reader invest in not only them but also their journey, especially that of our protagonist Evan.
Overall Three Paperclips & a Grey Scarf is a memorable, compelling and thought-provoking novel that will easily entertain readers for many days and nights and so, I, of course, have to award this stellar gem of a book five stars!
