Six bodies have turned up, all harboring the same strange surgical ports in their spine. One of the protagonists of the novel, DEA Special Agent Peter Malloy, knows the dreadful nature of drugs, and he assumes there must be a new opioid on the market, but one more intense and much more deadly. However, Malloy is shocked to learn that the spinal ports were used to deliver a genetic drug, one that alters a gene related to the victim’s ability to feel pain. This starts the motion of this thrilling book.

Allison Stevens, another protagonist in this novel, begins her own quest to understand what her boss, now a fugitive, had been up to. Her boss as been hiding a very specialized genetic research program in pain tolerance, and now Allison is on a hunt to find what other skeletons lay in his closet.  All the while, the FBI shadows everything she does.

And we follow a third story, that of Layla, who is a member of a cult. Layla spends every day experiencing bizarre pain rituals, and guess what? She likes them. And why? Because they are bringing her closer to her one single life purpose – Purification.

The climax of the story begins when Allison and Malloy arrive at The Colony.
