Thank you for joining us today at Red Headed Book Lover! Please tell us more about yourself
I consider myself to be an irrepressible optimist with a passion for the impossible and my nickname is Michael “Happy Ass” Taylor. I see life as this amazing gift that we are given and I do everything I can to enjoy and appreciate this amazing thing called life. Contrary to mainstream media it is my fervent belief that there has never been a better time to be alive on this planet than right now and I make it a point to share my optimism and enthusiasm through my writing. I definitely do not deny the challenges facing our world but I choose to be a part of the solution. Writing books and public speaking are two of my passions and I am truly grateful for the gifts Ive been given to be able to speak and write and to spread some good news around the globe.
Could you please tell us readers about your book and what inspired you to write your book?
In 1983 I was living the American Dream, by 1989 that dream turned into a nightmare as I experienced divorce, bankruptcy, foreclosure depression and I was homeless for two years living out of a car. During the darkest period of my life I had a revelation. I asked myself a simple question that changed my life in an instant. “What if I took all the energy and effort I had used in trying to get rich and make money, and simply figure out how to be happy.” As a result of asking myself this simple question I began a journey of inner transformation that changed my life forever. As a result of that question I was able to rebuild my life and now I am living my version of an extraordinary life. I wrote Adversity Is Your Greatest Ally as a resource for others who may be dealing with adversity and are looking for some tools to support them in turning their lives around.
What would your advice be for aspiring writers?
If you truly aspire to be a writer then my suggestion is to simply write. Write about everything. Write about things you love and write about things you disagree with. Share your voice and allow yourself to be heard. Write with the intention of sharing your unique gifts and talents with the world. Write when you feel joyful and when you feel sad. Write as an expression of your creativity and understand that writing is a gift that you should share with others. Write because you have something to say and do not worry about what others think about your writing. Use writing as a creative outlet that allows you to express who you are and what you believe. Write because you have to, because something deep inside compels you to put your thoughts to paper and use your voice to say to the world, I am here and I have something to say!
In your opinion, what is the most important thing about a book?
Ideas are the currency of the Universe. A book simply shares ideas that can be used to change the world. Books can transform lives when the message inspires and motivates a person to heed its words. It has been said that knowledge is power and there is no better way to share knowledge than through books. Books are timeless. They transcend time and space. They allow us to travel to distant places and meet amazing people from all over the world. Books capture truth and beauty and freeze them throughout eternity.
What is your writing process like?
I have been meditating for more than 25 years. I firmly believe that the process of mediation allows us to quiet our minds and listen to our hearts. I believe all creativity arises from our hearts not our brains so when we learn to surrender to that creative spark within our hearts writing becomes a joy. When we get our minds out of the way creativity pours through us. Writing becomes a process of taking dictation from a part of us that is so deep and so connected to our Souls that it defies description. It becomes a spiritual process in conjunction with a power greater than ourselves. When I get ready to write a book it literally emerges through me in the form of ideas. I keep my phone with me and as I receive ideas I make notes on my phone. I simply set an intention that I am going to receive ideas and the Universe begins giving me ideas about what to write about. I begin with a chapter outline and then I begin writing each chapter one by one. Four years ago I committed to writing a book a year for five years and I’ve kept that commitment and will complete book number five this year around September. I’ve actually written 7 books so far.
Do you have a set schedule for writing, or do you only write when you feel inspired?
Each September I begin writing a new book. I take a week off to do nothing but write. For that week I commit to writing for 8 hours each day. Sometimes I write 3-5 pages other times Ive written as many as 30 pages. I wrote a 45 thousand page book in 8 days one time.
Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?
I absolutely love books! I average approximately 1 book a month. I’m somewhat of a self-help junkie and I love reading personal development books. I enjoy reading books that support me in becoming the best version of myself possible. I love books by Wayne Dyer, Neale Donald Walsch, Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williams, Eckhart Tolle, Peter Diamandis and Michael Beckwith to name a few.
Lastly, when can we readers expect to read more wonderful books from you?
As mentioned, I’ll be writing a new book in September. I currently have titles and chapter outlines for 3 new books but I’m not sure which one I’ll choose to write about just yet. As the year progresses I’ll see which one spurs the most ideas and by September 1st I’ll definitely know which one to write next.
