Anna Issac’s choices are bleak. Suicide is more appealing than marrying the revolting Frenchman her spiteful brother has chosen for her. The only other option is to beg a man she barely knows, a Highlander, to help her run away. Escape would be a challenge for any fifteen-year-old, but it is particularly difficult for a Jewess living in 17th century Scotland. Anna’s tale would have remained a secret, except three centuries later the death of Hanna Duncan’s father on 9/11 unleashes a chain of events that leads her to an ancient key with a peculiar etching. Once deciphered, the clue points Hanna toward a safe deposit box in Edinburgh where Hanna uncovers Anna’s role in the creation of Scotland’s only colony. Caledonia promised to be the trading hub of the New World, but starvation, ship’s fever, and incompetent leadership dogged the 1,200 colonists from the moment they left Scotland. More than half would be buried at sea or in the colony’s muddy cemetery, and Anna would not be immune from the dreadful conditions. The outpost was deserted in less than a year. CALEDONIA is a tale of these two strong women separated by time but bound by mysterious circumstances. 21st century Hanna keeps uncovering evidence linking her to 17th century Anna. Both women experience romance, adventure, and tragedy as the reader witnesses them becoming more and more connected.
Caledonia is a novel I was excited to read thanks to the mention of mysterious as well as a historical fiction tale that weaves with modern times in the description. I love when novels feature many themes, themes that do not typically fit into the genre of the book and so I was excited to get lost in this brilliant mystery tale called Caledonia! Caledonia is an exceptional novel that will alight readers’ minds with amazement and entertain them from start to finish and this is thanks to the extraordinary author Sherry V. Ostroff who perfectly captivates her readers early in the start thanks to her wealth of world development and an intriguing plot. That is why I would already recommend that you lovely readers have a read of Caledonia, however, if you need more convincing then continue to read to learn more!
Caledonia is an exceptional novel that takes the reader on an unforgettable, poignant and thrilling journey. The reader will be introduced to two women in Caledonia, from two different times but both of whom share a tale that weaves together despite them living centuries apart. The reader will meet Anna Issac, a 15-year-old girl Jewish girl living in Scotland in the 17th century whose future is looking bleak. This is because Anna is being forced to marry an older Frenchman her brother has chosen but Anna does not want to marry this man and instead wants to run away, with the help of a Highlander called Alain. However, Alain is catholic and her family does not approve but Anna will do whatever it takes to not marry the Frenchman and this is in part her story.
However, the reader will also be introduced to Hanna Duncan, a woman in the 20th century who uncovers a secret from her father long after his death. The reader will witness Hanna find a key with peculiar markings, that force her on a journey to Scotland where she will uncover not only Anna’s story but also so much more and this book lovers is the short premise of the incredible Caledonia!
Caledonia is phenomenal, and the wealth of enticing information combined with the exceptional story will entertain readers from beginning to end! The author of Caledonia, Shery V. Ostroff perfectly describes every event and all the details for you. I admit that some novels can be confusing, sometimes the literature is too dense so that you feel as if you are walking towards a strong current – you can’t push through the text – however I found with Ostroff’s literature that although it was detailed, it was immersive. Ostroff manages to draw you in quickly and guide you along the way while never confusing you and I am impressed with Ostroff’s talent to accomplish this as it is not easily done!
To conclude, Caledonia is an incredible, phenomenal and breathtaking story that is immersive and full of detailed world-building so I, of course, have to award the stellar read an excellent five stars! So please, do read this book, book lovers and get lost in an incredible story as it will entertain you from beginning to end and leave a lasting impression.
