Atomic Pilgrim, James Patrick Thomas

James Patrick Thomas’s path toward nuclear disarmament began on Good Friday, 1982, when he and his fellow peace pilgrims started walking away from the Trident Nuclear Submarine Base near Seattle. Their Bethlehem Peace Pilgrimage would span 6,700 miles across the United States and nine other countries, each step aimed at ending the nuclear arms race.

After two years on the road, Jim continued his pursuit of peace and disarmament. Back in Spokane, Washington, Jim turned his attention toward the Hanford plutonium factory-one of the original Manhattan Project sites just 110 miles from his home. Over the next two decades, Jim helped uncover stunning revelations about Hanford’s toxic regional impact and its role in our nation’s nuclear weapons complex.

Atomic Pilgrim is the story of how one person’s faith, actions, and persistence can impact seemingly immovable systems and hold even the most powerful bureaucracies to account.

Atomic Pilgrim is a unique memoir, unlike anything I have read before, written by the incredible author James Patrick Thomas, and wow, what a story he shares with us readers! James Patrick Thomas will take us readers on his pilgrimage toward nuclear disarmament, and all that occurred during this time, as well as after, and what is learned is incredibly moving and powerful.

Atomic Pilgrim is an incredible and impactful read that follows author James Patrick Thomas on his inspiring journey to call for nuclear disarmament. The reader will follow James on his journey, starting in 1982 alongside fellow peace activists, where he walked 6,700 miles to call for an end to the nuclear arms race. Over the next two decades, James used his knowledge to reveal the dangers posed to the environment and shared his beliefs that helped challenge powerful organisations and push for change, and it makes for an incredible tale that can’t be missed!

I adore memoirs because they give the reader insight into a person’s fascinating life, but I especially love memoirs that involve an important journey, and Atomic Pilgrim is most certainly this. If the memoirist is brilliantly descriptive about what they see, experience, and feel, the reader will experience every moment with them, and Atomic Pilgrim is just this kind of read: a compelling memoir that transports the reader into the heart of a passionate quest for peace and nuclear disarmament.

Thanks to the author’s impeccable descriptions, the reader will feel present on the journey, and that is rare for a writer to achieve. James Patrick Thomas shows us, readers, that he is an incredibly talented author who knows how to transfix his readers with ease.

The profoundness in Thomas’s story is sensational, and many readers will feel a host of different emotions while reading this book because of how impactful Thomas’s journey was. I found myself reading Atomic Pilgrim at an alarming rate because it was captivating as well as engrossing; Thomas’s remarkable literature will have you turning the pages at an alarming rate, and I adored how he was able to do this.

As well as James Patrick Thomas writing his story in an extremely compelling way, he also excels at describing the settings and places in this book. Thomas’ beautifully descriptive writing about his pilgrimage and the places he visited will make the reader feel as if they are walking beside him; this is how I felt, and because I did, I felt as if I was with Thomas on his journey—and that for me was incredibly beautiful as well as transformative and informative.

To conclude my thoughts, Atomic Pilgrim is a remarkable, memorable, and informative story that readers are going to love, so I, of course, have to award this superb book five stars! So please, if you love memoirs with poignancy, then have a read of Atomic Pilgrim—you will not regret it!
