RED HEADED BOOK LOVER

Where To?, Jennifer B. Monahan

Memoir & Biography, NonFiction, Travel & Travel Guide

When Jennifer Monahan announced her intention to leave her well-established career as a business strategy consultant and give up her rent-controlled apartment in San Francisco to do a global walkabout for an undetermined amount of time, her friends and family thought she was insane. But Jennifer was excited about taking the time to truly explore and immerse herself in a variety of cultures, so their scepticism didn’t faze her; plus she was used to traveling alone as a woman with only one carry-on bag. What she didn’t count on was discovering all the excess baggage she had been carrying with her from her past.

WHERE TO? chronicles one year of Monahan’s life, primarily in the Guatemalan jungle, but also in Japan, Cambodia and Thailand. Living in a thatched-roof hut in a tiny village, Monahan connected with local shamans and participated in their ancient rituals, became fully integrated into the daily life of a local family, and ultimately faced down some of the greatest losses and long-buried pain she had experienced. WHERE TO? shares the six steps she took to heal and courageously create the life of her dreams, and includes a workbook for readers to do the same.

Where To? is a travel memoir that will take its readers on a moving and memorable journey across many different countries. The author’s story of her journey is incredible, and unlike anything I have read before, and that is why I already have to recommend this excellent book. I have read a lot of travel memoirs as it is a genre I adore however Where To? Stands out amongst the genre thanks to the sensational story and compelling literature. Never before have I been so enchanted by a memoir but the author and narrator of her own story, Jennifer B. Monahan managed to compel me from the very start thanks to her honest and captivating writing. If you are a reader who adores travel memoirs or memoirs, in general then Where To? is for you as it is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

Where To? is written by Jennifer B. Monahan and in her book, she narrates the story of her life through the many pivotal moments. Jennifer’s story starts when she leaves her life in San Francisco and her successful career to go on a ‘global walkabout.’ Jennifer’s friends and family thought she was ‘crazy,’ but Jennifer, along the way, learned many amazing things and experienced a great deal that shaped her as a person. The reader will follow Monahan in Thailand, Japan, and many other countries but mostly in Guatemala. It is here that Jennifer lived in a small village and immersed herself in the culture of the local shamans and in her book she shares their wisdom as well workbook inserts which will help readers with creating the life they want to and this book lovers is the premise of the incredible Where To?

Jennifer B. Monahan is an incredible woman who I admire so much, there is much I admire about Jennifer, but one of the core attributes I admire about her is the fact that she has told her story. Literature is an art form, and it is there for stories to be told and shared, and stories like Jennifer’s should definitely be shared thanks to the inspiring nature of it. Jennifer flawlessly narrates her story in a brazen, honest and inspiring way, the journey is tough at times, but mostly the story is inspiring because it shows us, readers, that anything can happen as long as you have the will and determination.

Not only is Jennifer a wonderful woman for sharing her story, but she is also exceptional for her beautiful literature laced throughout her memoir. Travel memoirs only work, in my opinion if the writing is honest as well as descriptive and Where To? is most certainly this. Jennifer has described her story perfectly, and the descriptions of the places she encounters are breath-taking; Jennifer will describe them so excellently that the reader will be able to feel as if they are right there.

As Where To? is a remarkable, memorable, and compelling piece of nonfiction I am going to award this book five stars. If you are a reader who adores travel memoirs then do read this book as the story between its pages will entertain you for many days and nights.
