Thea, Genevieve Morrissey

Oklahoma City, 1925

Fifteen-year-old Thea Carter lives in a small garage apartment—Thea’s seventh “home” in four years—provided by her alcoholic mother’s employer, the morose and enigmatic Dr. Hallam.

School is Thea’s refuge and she’s an excellent student, but the parasitic Mrs. Carter’s instability continually threatens her dream of getting a high school diploma. In an effort to keep her mother employed and the two of them housed, Thea secretly takes on much of her mother’s work while at the same time navigating adolescence, friendships, and first love.

Dr. Hallam, impressed by her drive and intelligence, becomes Thea’s unexpected ally, but in addition to wealth and position, the doctor also has a secret that could ruin him, and shatter his bond with Thea.

Thea is an incredible novel that is guaranteed to move and compel its readers from the very beginning to the very end. Thea is an exceptional book written by Genevieve Morrissey that entertained and captivated me from the start. Thea was captivating to me from the start thanks to the premise of the story and the bewitching literature courtesy of the author, Genevieve Morrissey who from the beginning hooked me with her fantastic story that stands out amongst its genre!

It is rare to find a novel that combines the themes this book does, and that is refreshing to me and so that is why I already recommend this book to you lovely readers! However, if you need more convincing, then continue to read to learn more!

Thea is an incredible tale that will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the novel, fifteen-year-old Thea Carter who while living in Oklahoma City in 1925, is dealing with the ups and downs of being a teenager while facing a lot of instability in her life. Thea lives in a small garage apartment with her alcoholic mother, provided by Dr. Hallam, her mother’s mysterious employer, and is Thea’s seventh home in four years.

Thea however, despite her challenges finds comfort in school, where she is a top student. However, her mother’s unpredictable behavior constantly threatens Thea’s goal of graduating from high school and so Thea hatches a plan. To help keep her mother employed and maintain their home, Thea secretly takes on a lot of her mother’s work. She does this while also managing the challenges of growing up, making friends, and experiencing first love.

Dr. Hallam notices Thea’s hard work and intelligence and becomes an unexpected supporter of hers, however, he has a secret that could ruin his reputation and damage his relationship with Thea forever and what follows is a shocking and unforgettable tale that shouldn’t be missed, and this book lovers is the short premise of the wonderful Thea!

The premise of Thea is exceptional, original, and beyond captivating! I loved the many themes and elements explored throughout the book, and all themes are explored by Genevieve Morrissey wonderfully, and she does this by lacing these interesting themes throughout the text flawlessly and weaving them with the story. The result of this makes Thea a highly addictive and fascinating read that is never once lackluster or predictable.

Genevieve Morrissey is a phenomenal writer who knows how to grasp her reader’s attention from the first page. Morrissey decides to thrust her reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach, what is the point of having a long build-up with little excitement? This is only necessary if the author in question can’t develop the characters in the story quickly, but with Thea, the reader will not encounter this issue because Morrissey instantly develops her characters and makes the reader invest in not only them but also their journey!

To conclude my thoughts on the wonderful book Thea, I would say Thea is a wonderful, compelling, and thought-provoking novel that will easily entertain readers for many days and nights and so I, of course, have to award this stellar gem of a book five stars!
