RED HEADED BOOK LOVER

The Reversible Mask, Loretta Goldberg

Summer 1566. A glittering royal progress approaches Oxford. A golden age of prosperity, scientific advances, exploration and artistic magnificence. Elizabeth I’s Protestant government has much to celebrate.

But one young Catholic courtier isn’t cheering.

Conflicting passions—patriotism and religion—wage war in his heart. On this day, religion wins. Sir Edward Latham throws away his title, kin, and country to serve Catholic monarchs abroad.

But his wandering doesn’t quiet his soul, and when Europe’s religious wars threaten his beloved England and his family, patriotism prevails. Latham switches sides and becomes a double agent for Queen Elizabeth. Life turns complicated and dangerous as he balances protecting country and queen, while entreating both sides for peace.

The Reversible Mask is an exceptional book written by Loretta Goldberg and wow, what a stellar book! The Reversible Mask for me was moving, captivating and addictive right from the start and I felt this from beginning to end. The Reversible Mask was captivating to me from the start thanks to the premise of the story and the bewitching literature courtesy of the author, Loretta Goldberg who from the start hooked me with her fantastic story that was unlike anything I have read before. It is rare to find a novel which combines the themes this book does, and that is refreshing to me, and it is even more challenging to discover a story that does not rely on cheap thrills! The Reversible Mask does have thrilling moments however they are tasteful and in no way gimmicky which is always fantastic in a book!

The Reversible Mask is an exceptional novel that will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the book, Sir Edward Latham and will introduce the reader to him in 1566 in Oxford, England. 1566 was a pivotal moment in history, and a fascinating one as this is when the arts, as well as science and even politics, boomed and blossomed, so it was quite an interesting era to be a part of! Some would say it is the year many became enlightened however Edward is not so sure and wants more from life. This forces Edward to travel abroad for his church so that he can serve Catholic monarchs. However, Edward has some inner turmoil which he is struggling with and this, paired with the fact that his homeland is on the brink of war makes things even worse. But soon he will be given a purpose and will work for the queen… as what? I do not want to spoil book lovers but read the incredible The Reversible Mask to find out!

The premise of The Reversible Mask is exceptional, original and unlike anything, I have read before. I loved the many themes and elements explored throughout the book, and all themes are explored by Goldberg wonderfully, and she does this by lacing these interesting themes throughout the text flawlessly and weaving them with the story. The result of this makes The Reversible Mask a highly addictive and fascinating read that is never once lackluster or predictable. Goldberg really has accomplished the near impossible, Goldberg has managed to write an entertaining, bewitching and flawless story that will perfectly unfold in readers minds like a movie and now that I think about it, why is this book not a movie already!

Loretta Goldberg is a phenomenal writer who knows how to grasp her reader’s attention from the first page. Goldberg instead of writing long, drawn-out builds up which are commonly found in novels, decides to ditch this approach and thrust her reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach, what is the point of having a long build-up with little excitement? This is only necessary if the author in question can’t develop the characters in the story quickly, but with The Reversible Mask, the reader, will not encounter this issue because Goldberg instantly develops her characters and makes the reader invest in not only them but also their journey.

Overall The Reversible Mask is a thrilling, compelling and thought-provoking novel that will easily entertain readers for many days and nights and so I, of course, have to award this stellar gem of a book five stars!
