Passing high school chemistry is the least of Brie Fyre’s worries.
The seventeen-year-old’s life is forever changed when she meets mysterious new kids, the heavily scarred Chloe Martin and her wolfish stepbrother, Alex Stone, at her boarding school in Hemlock Falls.
New faces may not be so new, after all.
After a party in the woods goes from boring to bloody, Brie is dragged to Prim-Terra, land of the primlocs, a magical race of beings created long before humans.
Nine powerful families from ancient bloodlines rule the land of Vahalia, each of who wields a deadly ability. The Blood of Silverstone have the power to grow the most beautiful of roses with one hand, all the while choking you with a vine in the other. The Blood of Windermere can soar amongst the ravens, while the Blood of Borgen can swim with the meremaidens. The Blood of Diagon may turn wood into ash with a flick of their wrist, but the Blood of Blackheart can turn diamonds into ash with a curl of their palm.
In order to survive this ruthless world and find out the missing pieces of her past, she must adapt to life in a dangerous game of power struggles, ever-changing alliances, and the occasional bewitched vine trying to make you a midnight snack.
With the High Lord hunting her to complete an ancient prophecy stemming back to the Age of the Gods, the girl must seek the help of the very people who dragged her to this world as she learns to play a dangerous game of life, death, and love.
As the hunt begins, Brie must decide which role she shall play – hunter or prey?
The Return of Light is a novel I was desperate to read ever since discovering it and caught my attention right away thanks to its description which alludes to mysterious world and race which intrigued me. Now and then a reader will come across that one book that blows them away, it is a somewhat generic term, but that is what The Return of Light did to me. That is why I am already going to recommend The Return of Light to you lovely readers, and yes, it may be early on in my review, but The Return of Light is a novel not to be missed!
The Return of Light for me was thrilling, captivating and addictive right from the start and I felt this from beginning to end. The Return of Light was captivating to me from the start thanks to the unique premise of the story and the bewitching literature courtesy of the author, Madeline C.C. Harper who from the start hooked me with her unique story that was unlike anything I have read before. It is rare to find a refreshing fantasy novel, and it is even more challenging to discover a fantasy story that does not rely on gimmicks and ridiculous action sequences! The Return of Light does have action-packed moments; however, they are tasteful and in no way gimmicky which is always fantastic in a book!
The Return of Light is a breathtaking novel that will introduce the reader to the star of the book, Brie Fyre. Brie is a seventeen-year-old girl in high school and one day her world drastically changes forever when she meets the mysterious Chloe Martin and her stepbrother, Alex Stone. This meeting starts the path of twists and turns and soon Brie will discovery (not willingly!) the Prim-Terra. Prim-Terra is a world full of magical beings known as Primlocs, beings created before humanity and soon Brie will be immersed in this world. I do not want to spoil what happens next book lovers but what follows is truly captivating and will keep the reader hooked for hours on end!
The premise of The Return of Light is exceptional, original and unlike anything I have read before. I loved the many themes and elements explored throughout the book, and all themes are explored by Harper wonderfully, and she does this by lacing these interesting themes throughout the text flawlessly and weaving them with the story. The result of this makes The Return of Light a highly addictive and fascinating read that is never once lackluster or predictable.
Madeline C.C. Harper is a phenomenal writer who knows how to grasp her reader’s attention from the first page. Harper instead of writing long, drawn-out builds up which are commonly found in fantasy novels, decides to ditch this approach and thrust her reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach, what is the point of having a long build-up with little excitement? This is only necessary if the author in question can’t develop the characters in the story quickly, but with The Return of Light, the reader will not encounter this issue because Harper instantly develops her characters and makes the reader invest in not only them but also their journey.
Madeline C.C. Harper is not only a brilliant writer for her ability to captivate the reader’s attention straight away, but she is also an excellent author for her ability to lace exceptional twists and turns throughout her story that genuinely had me shocked at points! The combination of Harper’s shocking twists and her explanatory powers will immerse the reader in the story and make them be able to visualize every detail, no matter how small. This writing approach is one of my favorites because it makes the reader feel included in the story and make the reader feel as if they are in the same situation as the protagonists of the novel.
Overall The Return of Light is a thrilling, compelling and thought-provoking novel that will easily entertain readers for many days and nights and so I, of course, have to award this stellar gem of a book five stars!
