After each combat deployment to Iraq, it took me months to return to what I considered ‘normal.’
In The Iraq I Knew: From Saddam Hussein to Weapons of Mass Destruction to Al Qaeda in Iraq, the series chronicles my, Colonel Burl Randolph Jr.’s firsthand experiences on each of my deployments to Iraq.
In Book I: Into the Storm, I was a newly promoted US Army Captain. I recounted our experiences, from the shock of the alert to the exhausting deployment to Desert Shield. Living in the harsh deserts of Saudi Arabia, the months ticked by while the rocket attacks continued, and eventually, all diplomatic solutions failed.
While serving in the famous 1st Cavalry Division, I described the transition to Desert Storm combat operations and our dangerous but vital mission to help liberate Kuwait.
Lastly, I explained the difficulty of transitioning from the war in Iraq to the US, where life continued without us.

Colonel Burl Randolph, Jr’s story is one of the most shocking but poignant stories I have ever read. Randolph’s journey is upsetting at points, and although the events throughout this book are hard-hitting, the primary feeling associated with this book is inspiration, as Randolph is brave to share his story and be open and honest about all he felt along the way. It takes a lot for a person to be this open and honest and so I admire that about Randolph.
Colonel Burl Randolph, Jr. is an incredible man for many reasons, but one of the reasons he is so wonderful is because he brazenly shares his story to help inform readers about the harsh realities of being a soldier and to speak his truth.
