RED HEADED BOOK LOVER

The Hatching, Ezekiel Boone

Deep in the jungle of Peru, where so much remains unknown, a black, skittering mass devours an American tourist whole. Thousands of miles away, an FBI agent investigates a fatal plane crash in Minneapolis and makes a gruesome discovery. Unusual seismic patterns register in a Kanpur, India earthquake lab, confounding the scientists there. During the same week, the Chinese government “accidentally” drops a nuclear bomb in an isolated region of its own country. As these incidents begin to sweep the globe, a mysterious package from South America arrives at a Washington, D.C. laboratory. Something wants out.

The world is on the brink of an apocalyptic disaster. An ancient species, long dormant, is now very much awake.

“She didn’t know how many of them there were, but they were frantic. Dozens of them at least. They’d been packed in the egg, and they came out in a swarm, their bodies unfolding, alien and beautiful. Big and fast, black apricots thundering against the glass. Skittering.”

Oh my gosh, I did not think a book about spiders could be so thrilling but wow this scary and creepy as hell. Thinking about the events in this book alone makes my skin crawl. I am actually shocked by how spooked out this has made me because I do not get scared easily but the way this story of the carnivorous spiders was wrote was terrifying so I applaud Boone for creating a horror gem! Now let me tell you a little bit more about The Hatching.

Our book begins with an egotistical rich guy who is trying to impress his lady friends with a hike through the forest. He soon takes a detour into the woods and soon sees something which he thinks is a river of black… however I am sure you can guess by now that it is not. Soon news of these spiders – which are nasty little things – spreads across the globe from India to China and America and so on. There are reports of rivers of black all across the world and people are horrifically dying. Will humanity be able to survive these previously dormant creatures? You will have to read the novel to find out!

After the events in Peru, we are introduced to our main protagonist Melanie. Melanie is a divorced scientist whose life has been consumed by her love of all things science. One day a suspicious package arrives at her laboratory from Peru and she soon notices that it’s pulsating and warm (which is creepy as hell no?). Soon this object begins to crack and well…chaos ensues!

To say The Hatching chilled me to the bone is an understatement! It crept the hell out of me and made my spine tingle and skin crawl. Boone has done a fantastic job with his writing that he installed true horror inside me. The telling of the story switches back and forth between characters from around the world (which shows how widespread the problem is) and the character’s chapters are smartly short so that it makes for a compulsive, quick read. There were many unimaginable moments in this novel which really made me gasp and shocked me to my core and I have to say I haven’t experienced this from a writer in a long time. It is a brilliant piece of work from an accomplished writer and I enjoyed it so much; however, it is a very haunting and chilling one also so you have been warned!

To summarize my points I would say that if you are looking for a horror novel, which will genuinely keep you on the edge of your seat, keep you terrified to the end but also give you an enjoyable reading experience then read The Hatching. However, if you are afraid of spiders then yes, I would advise you not to read this because there are a lot of them in this novel and they are not the moderately cute animated Disney kind but horrible nasty, vile spiders! This wonderful book gets Four Stars from me!

Thank you so much for reading book lovers! Please do comment below what you think of this novel and whether you could see yourself reading it. Also, let me know if you are fearful of any animals, I find it all so interesting! Let me know also whether you read much horror, I would love to know. Thank you so much as ever for reading!

Aimee- Anytime!! I’m hard at work on my third publication as we speak. At certain times we need to time to flush our minds out.

Oh gawd no!!! *faints*
Okay personally spiders are not anywhere close to my favourite critters and are only second to snakes on my “KILL IT” list. So this book is both intriguing and really freaky. I’d still love to read it though. *shivers

Nthato Morakabi

Well I’ve always had a fear of both spiders and snakes. Snakes probably because I watched Anaconda when I was really young and am scarred for life. And I’ve seen too many “but by a snake” videos and pics to last a life time.

And then imagine how I felt when I watched Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Aragog the spider? Oh and let’s not forget the Shelob the giant spider in Lord of the Rings the Two Towers.
*shivers
And the movie Arachnophobia…

Nthato Morakabi

Oh no ways. I avoided it like the plague.

Hey, I haven’t got my copy yet, but it’s on my list, which means I’ll get to it. There is approximately twenty books ahead of it! I love science fiction and a bit of horror so it looks right up my street 🙂

Difficult to pick a favourite. Anything by Phil K. Dick, Gibson, “The foundation trilogy” by Asimov. More recently, I can highly recommend “Seveneves” by Neal Stephenson. Stupendously good book.

I LOVE spiders:)). So I’m not reading this one out of concern for the poor, cute little creatures in case they get hurt… But a great review, Aimee.

Nasty vile spiders!lol Definitely not Disney, hell no!😂🕸️🕷️

I loved this book too, which I mentioned on Twitter, great review, definitely not one for people who don’t like spiders, Spider gifs in the reviews also work like a charm for the Spider haters to!😂

It’s ‘horror’ but I have to say that I found it fun and entertaining, loved it, the pages flew by. I hope you enjoy Skitter, I liked it, not quite upto the level of The Hatching, in my opinion as it’s slightly different but still a damn fine book.

The Boy on the Bridge, it’s the sequel to The Girl With All The Gifts, which I haven’t read, but it can be read as a standalone. It’s good, serious, especially compared to Skitter!😂

Drew @ TheTattooedBookGeek

I’m not sure!lol There’s mention of a previous convoy by the name of the Charles Darwin, not sure if that is in the previous book (I haven’t read it) if it is then yeah, I guess it’s similar but if not, I haven’t a clue. Being honest after I’d read this could be read as a standalone I stayed away from reading any The Girl With All The Gifts reviews beforehand, just to see how easy I could pick it up.

Drew @ TheTattooedBookGeek
Reply to  Aimee Ann

Yeah, though they are called hungries and it’s got a serious tone, it’s not like The Hatching done with zombies!😂

Drew @ TheTattooedBookGeek

Very true, I think it’s the fact that they are so small too, just innocuous little spiders yet blood thirsty!😂

Drew @ TheTattooedBookGeek

Definitely have a point, there’s just something about the rampaging mass of tiny critters, especially as they make a hole and lay eggs inside without you knowing!😂

Drew @ TheTattooedBookGeek
Reply to  Aimee Ann

If we are going by the book, they are already here, laying dormant, waiting to be discovered!😂

Well, I only occasionally swear, The Hatching, Skitter and The Mirror’s Truth was mega foul mouthed.lol But it is what it is, as you say some people are so serious now days, I got pulled up by one on my blog before.lol 😂

Drew @ TheTattooedBookGeek

Lol, had to smile at that! Not rude, not swearing, not filthy or even dirty language but vulgar, damn, it must have been bad to be deemed as vulgarity!😂

Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek

Ha, it’s not that bad, if you want vulgar check out my The Mirror’s Truth by Michael R Fletcher Book Review, it’s vulgar to the extreme compared to simply using f#ck and oozes sarcasm at the start to.😂 and someone said it was the best review they’ve read, I guess some people don’t mind and even like swearing whereas others don’t, though in today’s society swearing isn’t a big deal.

The only reason I write f#ck instead of the actual word is because I don’t want to end up in spam jail on WordPress.😂

Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek

Ha, that review would make people who don’t like vulgar stuff cringe, their eyes would bleed!lol 🙂

Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek

Erm…..I’m a book blogger, shocking revelation right there. My names Drew and just like the blog name, I have tattoos! I don’t know many people who read, hardly any really and so I decided to start a blog, it started on March 5th last year. I’m mainly a fantasy fan, but do on occasion read other genres, like real-life serious spider books!😂

I also dabble in poetry and the very rare discussion post.

Lol, I’d hope I can recommend books from the genre I like, I wouldn’t be a very good blogger if I couldn’t!😂

Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames, Red Sister by Mark Lawrence, both recently released and both awesome. The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams, The Faithful and the Fallen series by John Gwynne, The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie, The Greatcoats series by Sebastian de Castell. And while it’s not fantasy, I’d highly recommend The Wolf Road by Beth Lewis to read.

Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek

I’m a 13 year old adolescent man boy!😂

Nah, I’m old, 35 though lots of fantasy bloggers seem to be old, older than me, lots of other bloggers are to. Blogging wasn’t something I had ever considered up until last year so I came to it really late.

Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek

Ah, OK, no offence was meant by my Yanky comment!😀

Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek

Maybe, though I’m quite Americanised with my language and sayings, so who knows, what I spout isn’t always the English way!lol

Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek

Never got into Preacher. I completely agree with you though, it’s down to all the US films and TV shows, also books, even the damn UK authors, from UK publishers use American spelling now!😂

Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek

Ha, very true, the worst words for me are colour and grey or the yank equivalent color and gray and sad to say often I find myself using the yank version, then having to change it!😂 It’s just weird, especially when it’s a UK author with a UK publisher, you’d think it’d be in English, but no, strange. Favourite TV shows, Black Sails, TWD, Z-nation, GoT, Gotham, The inbetweeners, Bad Education, Mrs Brown’s Boys, The Goldbergs, The Big Bang Theory, Flash, Arrow, more that I can’t currently think of, I don’t really watch much TV, prefer reading really. I saw a couple of episodes of the US version but it was awful! Not surprised they find the show offensive, probably don’t get half the words used in it!😂

Favourite TWD characters, tough one, probably the cliche answer of Darryl and I like Negan too, even he comes across as camp, always liked Glenn and Maggie together, but much proffered the older series to the last couple.lol Can’t stand Carol and Morgan, sigh, they annoy me!😂

Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek

Damn, I’d better try harder then!😂

Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek

Nah, you’re fine, it’s your blog comments section and you are commenting, it’d be me who would get spammed as I’m from another blog, likewise on my blog comments I can swear and it’d be the bloggers who are commenting/swearing that could get spammed.

I have to be careful, I like that I haven’t been spammed, means I can always laugh about it when others are….unless it happens to me of course! lol

Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek

I’m not sure, from what I’m aware bloggers usually complain to askimet (the spam blocking site) and get it lifted or go around commenting on loads of blogs and get the bloggerss to unspam the comments, that gets them out of spam jail, some even write a post that they are in spam and want help getting out.lol

I guess they could delete the blog though. 🙁

Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek

There’s a spam comments section in the wordpress mobile reader, I often just check mine in there when I remember but also on the comments section of the wordpress dashboard there should be a section for spam, I think it just says something like (8 spam comments) and you have to click on it to see more.
