The Fall of the Phoenix, Daniel Kelly

The long siege of Troy, the battles fought over it, and the city’s eventual capitulation and incineration are events which have often been retold since their first recitation by Homer. Seldom, however, will they have been narrated with such close attention to the minute particulars of battle, to its reek and terror and pain, as in this startling account by Daniel Kelly. Kelly looks minutely at every detail of archaic combat, as well as at the lives and feelings shaped by it. His Troy is not only a scene of shining glory, but also a grimy struggle for survival and mastery. And he introduces surprising questions: what if not everything in the Trojan war came to pass just as Homer tells us? What if the future of the Roman empire were hidden in the burning ashes of Troy’s – and not in the way we might expect?

The Fall of the Phoenix is a novel I was desperate to read ever since discovering it and caught my attention right away thanks to its description which alludes to Troy and a deeper look into its story. Now and then a reader will come across that one book that blows them away, it is a somewhat generic term, but that is what The Fall of the Phoenix did to me. That is why I am already going to recommend The Fall of the Phoenix to you lovely readers, and yes, it may be early on in my review, but The Fall of the Phoenix is a novel not to be missed!

The Fall of the Phoenix for me was thrilling, captivating and addictive right from the start and I felt this from beginning to end. The Fall of the Phoenix was captivating to me from the start thanks to the premise of the story and the bewitching literature courtesy of the author, Daniel Kelly who from the start hooked me with his unique story that was unlike any Troy inspired novel I have read before. It is rare to find a refreshing Troy novel, and it is even more challenging to discover a Troy story that does not rely on gimmicks and ridiculous action sequences! The Fall of the Phoenix does have action-packed moments; however, they are tasteful and in no way gimmicky which is always fantastic in a book!

The Fall of the Phoenix is a breathtaking novel that will take its readers back to the penultimate days of the City of Troy and what happened before it fell into the grip of the Greek armies and how the Trojan War ended after an exceptional amount of time. Daniel Kelly in his book will delve into the story, examine protagonists and share the nitty-gritty details that will paint an accurate picture of what it could have been like. It made for a thrilling story that transported me effortlessly and that is why this book should not be missed book lovers!

Daniel Kelly is a phenomenal writer who knows how to grasp his reader’s attention from the first page. Kelly instead of writing long, drawn-out builds up which are commonly found in historical fiction novels, decides to ditch this approach and thrust his reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach, what is the point of having a long build-up with little excitement? This is only necessary if the author in question can’t develop the characters in the story quickly, but with The Fall of the Phoenix, the reader will not encounter this issue because Kelly instantly develops his characters and makes the reader invest in not only them but also their journey.

Daniel Kelly is not only a brilliant writer for his ability to captivate the reader’s attention straight away, but he is also an excellent author for his ability to lace exceptional twists and turns throughout his story that genuinely had me shocked at points! The combination of Kelly’s shocking twists and his explanatory powers will immerse the reader in the story and make them be able to visualize every detail, no matter how small.

To conclude The Fall of the Phoenix is a thrilling, compelling and memorable novel that will easily entertain readers for many days and nights and so I, of course, have to award this stellar gem of a book five stars!
