RED HEADED BOOK LOVER

Skin in the Game, Kelly J. Mendenhall

Skin in the Game: The Stories My Tattoos Tell is Kelly Mendenhall’s autobiographical debut as an author. In the book, Kelly tells of the significant events and pivotal moments of her life by way of recounting the stories behind her eclectic collection of tattoos. Those moments include the death of her father as a young girl, surviving the physical and sexual abuse she endured as an adolescent, the gut-wrenching loss of friends who died too young, and so much more. The reader witnesses the author surviving, growing, and thriving throughout each chapter, until her legs fall out from under her, literally and figuratively, at the age of 35. Suddenly, everything changes all over again and she must reinvent herself and overcome once more. Each chapter is accompanied by photographs of the tattoos described therein, bringing to life the images painted in the reader’s imagination through carefully crafted storytelling. Skin in the Game is a must-read ― a narrative of honesty and authenticity rarely observed in a world in which so many of us merely share the highlight reels of our lives. This book is written for anyone who has ever thought of giving up, anyone needing inspiration to keep on fighting, and anyone who fears that they are too far gone for redemption. This book is Kelly’s way of turning her mess into a message that inspires others to survive and thrive.

Skin in the Game is a poignant, moving, unique, and inspirational memoir that will take readers on a thought-provoking journey while entertaining them at the same time. Skin in the Game is written by author Kelly J. Mendenhall and Mendenhall throughout Skin in the Game will take her readers on a journey through many pivotal moments in her life. The journey the reader will encounter is at times heartbreaking because of what Kelly experienced and what significantly impacted her life in so many ways, but Kelly’s story is also an uplifting one too in which Kelly will make you smile thanks to her positive outlook on life. If you are a reader, who is looking to read a memoir that is unlike anything you read and blends a journal with a visual journey then Skin in the Game is the book for you and should not be missed.

Memoirs, combined with poignant themes are my favorite type of books to read. I adore memoirs because they give the reader insight into a person’s fascinating life and when the reader is granted this insight the reader can learn so much from their story, and many readers will be able to learn a lot from Kelly’s story in Skin in the Game. Skin in the Game is an emotional but also inspirational book and will follow the narrator and writer of the memoir, Kelly J. Mendenhall and in her book, she shares her ups and downs and the moments that impacted her life, but she does this through her tattoos as every tattoo she has, has a meaning. In her book, Kelly will share the many events she experienced, from sexual abuse to loss of family and friends but despite this all, Kelly still overcame and in her book she shares how she does just this and shares her wisdom along the way.

The profoundness in Skin in the Game is sensational, and many readers will feel a host of different emotions while reading this book. Kelly effortlessly inspires thoughts and feelings in her readers as well as compel them to read from beginning to end. I found myself reading Skin in the Game at an alarming rate because it was captivating as well as absorbing; Kelly’s incredible literature will have you turning the pages frantically, and I adored how she was able to do this.

Skin in the Game is a poignant, moving, and compelling piece of nonfiction that will help, inspire, and captivate its readers from the very start until the very end. Skin in the Game is an influential, powerful book because it deals with many poignant topics. I believe that Skin in the Game will be the perfect read for those that have experienced significant hardship like Kelly because Kelly, although brutally honest about how she felt, still manages to inspire and inject positivity into the story and this will help those in similar circumstances.

Kelly J. Mendenhall is a remarkable person for two reasons; the first is because she is honest and brave to write her story, and the second is because she is an exceptionally talented author. Kelly’s excellent writing is a joy to read and flows beautifully throughout so that the reader will feel compelled to read non-stop. The life lessons learned from Kelly in Skin in the Game will help readers better navigate through their own life, and that is so beautiful to me because it is rare to come across a memoir that will not only entertain but also help readers.

Overall Skin in the Game is an insightful, informative, inspiring book and I would say if you are a reader who is interested in the topics explored in Skin in the Game and coming out the other side, then this book is for you, and so Skin in the Game gets five stars from me!
