Saving Grace at Guantanamo Bay, Montgomery J. Granger

“Hard as it is to believe, one of the most significant stories of the post-9/11 age is also one of the least known-life at Gitmo, the detention facility for many of the world’s worst terrorists. Few individuals are more qualified to tell this story than Montgomery Granger, a citizen soldier, family man, dedicated educator, and Army Reserve medical officer involved in one of the most intriguing military missions of our time. Saving Grace at Guantanamo Bay is about that historic experience, and it relates not only what it was like for Granger to live and work at Gitmo, but about the sacrifices made by him and his fellow Reservists serving around the world.” Andrew Carroll, editor of the New York Times bestsellers War Letters and Behind the LinesSaving Grace at Guantanamo Bay, or “Gitmo: The Real Story,” is a “good history of medical, security, and intelligence aspects of Gitmo; also, it will be valuable for anyone assigned to a Gitmo-like facility.” Jason Wetzel, Field Historian, Office of Army Reserve HistoryU.S. Army Reserve Captain Montgomery Granger found himself the ranking Army Medical Department officer in a joint military operation like no other before it – taking care of terrorists and murderers just months after the horrors of September 11, 2001. Granger and his fellow Reservists end up running the Joint Detainee Operations Group (JDOG) at Guantanamo Bay’s infamous Camp X-Ray. In this moving memoir, Granger writes about his feelings of guilt, leaving his family and job back home, while in Guantanamo, he faces a myriad of torturous emotions and self-doubt, at once hating the inmates he is nonetheless duty bound to care for and protect. Through long distance love, and much heartache, Granger finds a way to keep his sanity and dignity.

Saving Grace at Guantanamo Bay is a moving, poignant, and thought-provoking memoir courtesy of the author Montgomery J. Granger who shares his journey in the U.S. Army as a Reserve Major (Ret.) in the Medical Service Corps and all that he experienced when he was tasked with running the military detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. What the reader will read is eye-opening as well as incredibly shocking but also moving as we learn a first-person account of somebody who so selflessly served. The journey the reader is taken on is an emotional, sometimes upsetting one, but an important story above all that will move and touch its readers from start to finish. That is why I already have to recommend that you lovely readers have a read of Saving Grace at Guantanamo Bay; however, if you need more convincing then continue to read to learn more about this memorable book.

Saving Grace at Guantanamo Bay is an enlightening, honest, and poignant memoir courtesy of an exceptional man. Granger’s tale is a harrowing one you will struggle to forget as we embark on a journey with him to Guantanamo Bay and all that he experienced there. It is here that he and his squad were tasked with taking care of Muslim POWs, highlighting the struggles he faced during this time. Granger is honest about the array of emotions he felt during this time, from feeling resentment of taking care of hostile POW’s instead of being there in person with his family and newborn son to feeling wronged how he had to take such thorough care of those who have spent their lives harming Americans.

The result is an eye-opening tale that explores a side of war you don’t often see from somebody who is candid about his thoughts and feelings and all that he went through. It makes for an incredibly poignant and unforgettable tale that everybody should read thanks to the importance and this book lovers is the short premise of the incredible Saving Grace at Guantanamo Bay.

Montgomery J. Granger’s story is one of the most shocking but poignant stories I have ever read. Granger’s journey is upsetting at points, and although the events throughout this book are hard-hitting, the primary feeling associated with this book is inspiration, as Granger is brave to share his story and be open and honest about all he felt along the way and how it affected him personally. It takes a lot for a person to be this open and honest and so I admire that about Granger.

Montgomery J. Granger is an incredible man for many reasons, but one of the reasons he is so wonderful is that he brazenly shares his story to help inform people and to speak his truth. I adore how Granger did not hold back on the details of hardships, he poignantly writes about all he has endured, and it makes for profound reading that provides insight many will not have had before.

Overall Saving Grace at Guantanamo Bay is an incredibly poignant and inspiring tale that will leave a lasting impact on readers and is the perfect read for those who love to read inspiring memoirs and those who love reading about the military. As Saving Grace at Guantanamo Bay is one of the most incredible memoirs I have ever read, I have no choice but to award this incredible book a dazzling five stars as it truly deserves it!
