Set in Devon, England in the 1960’s, Raised by Committee tells the story of an abandoned and abused young girl’s journey as she struggles to make sense of her past. At age 12, Gail is made a ‘ward of the courts, as being in need of moral protection’. She is placed under the care of the ubiquitous Children’s Committee and sent to live in a children’s home. Set against a backdrop of Beatlemania and the sexual revolution, Raised by Committee chronicles Gail’s roller coaster emotional ride as she rails against the restrictions put on her life and struggles to fill the void left by her parents. As much as she resents the interference of the Children’s Committee, deep down she realizes that she needs their protection – from herself as much as anyone. Gail has a wild streak in her fuelled by hurt and anger, and a searing anguish which threatens to consume her.
From runaway, to thief to top student, Gail’s life runs the gamut from despair to hope. Just when she thinks everything is fine, it blows up in her face again and again.
Raised by Committee has to be one of the most moving memoirs I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Carollyne Haynes is the author of Raised by Committee and throughout her book, she shares her experiences growing up in 1960s England and how her life was changed forever when at the age of just 12, she was placed in a children’s home. The reader will follow Carollyne as she shares her life with us from being abandoned by her mother and sexually abused by her father, to life in a children’s home to life beyond institutional care. It makes for a poignant, raw, and unforgettable read where we see Carollyne embark on a journey full of ups and downs but one that is full of hope for the future, and this book lovers is the short premise of ht incredible Raised by Committee!
Carollyne Haynes’s story is a moving and heartbreaking one that will speak volumes to many readers, especially to those who have had similar experiences to Carollyne. The story, although at times heartbreaking is still an inspiring one because Carollyne shares her journey of how she overcame her circumstances and still excelled. That is why Carollyne is a truly wonderful woman in my opinion, both for her incredible writing but also for her reasons for sharing her story with us to inform, inspire, and entertain us.
The profoundness of Raised by Committee is sensational, and many readers will feel a host of different emotions while reading this book. Carollyne Haynes effortlessly inspires thoughts and feelings in her readers and compels them to read from beginning to end. I found myself reading Raised by Committee at an alarming rate because it was captivating as well as absorbing; Carollyne’s incredible literature will have you turning the pages frantically, and I adored how she was able to do this.
Raised by Committee is an informative, well-written memoir with words that flow beautifully throughout and so I have no choice but to award this stunning book a brilliant five stars. If you are a reader who loves memoirs with poignancy, then Raised by Committee will make the perfect read for you, so do not miss this book!
