A story of hope and survival
Before COVID there was Spanish influenza. In 1918 there were masks. Schools, restaurants, and even churches closed. A nation at war curtailed the draft. One in four Americans stricken, and an estimated 675,000 Americans dead. All because of a deadly germ carried on a puff of air. But there were no effective vaccines. No ventilators. No medicines to stop a virus. And a war to win.
Everyone likes Josie, except the spoiled and arrogant Billy Detwiler. He calls her Pharmacy Girl, but it is no compliment. As the hazy days of September 1918 drift into the deadly autumn of Spanish influenza, Josie’s everyday problems of school and friends, even the war effort at home, become insignificant when her mother comes down with the flu. But Josie is no slacker. She faces Billy in a class election, raises money for the Liberty Loan, and steps up to help her family when the pandemic strikes home.

Pharmacy Girl is an incredible novel that captivated me from the first page thanks to the book’s sharp literature! The reader thanks to the exceptional author Kate Szegda will be thrust into the story early on thanks to Szegda’s fast-paced narrative. The fast-paced narrative combined with the extraordinary story had me in a frenzy and turning the pages with haste, and when a reader does this, then they know that the book is excellent and worthy of a recommendation!
The premise of Pharmacy Girl is exceptional, original, and incredibly entertaining! Szegda really has accomplished the near-impossible, Szegda has managed to write an entertaining, bewitching, and flawless story that will perfectly unfold in readers’ minds like a movie that still holds many poignant messages that will help inspire readers. That is why I truly adore this book as it is rare to find a book that combines the two!
Kate Szegda is a phenomenal writer who knows how to grasp her reader’s attention from the first page. Szegda instead of writing long, drawn-out builds up which are commonly found in many novels, decides to ditch this approach and thrust her reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach as there is no point to drag out a story so I loved that Szegda introduced me fast and kept me hooked from start to finish!
