Carol D. Marsh founded, directed, and lived at Miriam’s House, a Washington, DC, residence for homeless women living with AIDS. In this powerful memoir, Marsh recalls how she came to confront issues far removed from her own experience: addiction, poverty, and the institutional racism that permeates our society on every level. From the humorous to the tragic, the mundane to the sublime, Marsh offers a gripping view into a world where the stakes are high and love is pushed to its limit.
Nowhere Else I Want to Be is the story of the inspiring women who transformed Marsh’s life. From Kimberly, who triumphs over a lifelong alcohol addiction, to Alyssa, who dies reaching out for the mother who abandoned her, Marsh witnesses the spectrum of human experience and the depth of the human spirit.
Nowhere Else I Want to Be has to be one of the most moving memoirs I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Carol D. Marsh is the author of Nowhere Else I Want to Be and throughout her book she shares her experiences of when she worked at Miriam’s House, which is a residential facility for homeless woman living with AIDS. Throughout Nowhere Else I Want to Be Carol shares her story and other peoples stories who lived at the house and the result is a poignant piece of literature that will charm, inform and move its readers from beginning to end.
Nowhere Else I Want to Be will take the reader through the experiences of Carol D. Marsh while she directed the Miriam’s House in Washington D.C. Throughout the seventeen years Marsh directed the residence, she experienced a great lot and heard stories from many women and in Nowhere Else I Want to Be she shares these with her readers. Carol is honest about the fact that she grew up upper middle class and never wanted for anything. Carol had a college education, never had to struggle and was happy so to work at Miriam’s House was a shock at first because Carol was given a glance into a world that is sheltered from so many of us. While there Carol heard many stories of abuse, trauma, and addiction. Carol was in awe of these women for sharing their stories, and so she wanted to share their stories as well as her own with us readers so that we can be informed on topics such as AIDS, addiction, abuse, and trauma all while being moved by the spirit of humanity.
Carol D. Marsh’s story is an exceptional one that will speak volumes to many readers, especially to those that have AIDS or have experienced abuse or trauma. The story, although at times heartbreaking is still an inspiring one because the women at the house had hope and that transgresses in the stories Carol shares with us. Carol is a truly wonderful woman in my opinion, both for her incredible writing but also for her reasons for sharing her story and others stories with us to inform, inspire and entertain us.
