Thank you for sharing so much about your journey with us, it is great to get to know you better! Could you please tell us readers about your book Infernal Gates and what inspired you to write your book?
I was driving to an appointment out of town and started thinking about what would happen if my wife and I were on a plane that crashed shortly after take-off. However, in the instant before the crash we blacked out and awakened the next morning dressed in the same clothes we were wearing for the flight. We were the only survivors. How would we explain what happened? Who would believe us? Why were we spared? Those questions and others rattled around in my head as I drove and became the core of Infernal Gates. I wrote the opening chapter and the story unfolded itself as my characters came alive and took over.
Wow it is amazing that the inspiration for your story came like that! What would your advice be for aspiring writers?
Write what you love to read, what’s in your heart, and don’t focus on trends—they change.
Remind yourself daily “Why” you are writing. (What is it that drives you to express yourself through the written word?)
Hone your craft. Attend conferences if you can and mingle with like-minded authors, meet agents and publishers, develop a network of author mentors if possible.
Keep your readers engaged. Every scene should draw them deeper into the world you are creating or bringing to light.
Read, read, read what others are writing.
Never, never give up.
This is great advice and will surely be useful for aspiring writers! In your opinion, what is the most important thing about a book?
I primarily write fiction, so I’ll address your question from a novelist’s perspective. For me, a novel should immediately draw me in with the premise or plot. I need to really like the characters, both protagonists and antagonists. There must be what Don Maas calls “micro tension.” I know I’m reading something special when I don’t skip a line or a page. Finally, when I finish reading, I want MORE.
I agree! The premise has to hook a reader instantly and I definitely experienced this with your book! What is your writing process like?
Typically, I see everything like a movie and write down scenes as they unfold. At some point the characters take over. All I do is act as a scribe and pen what’s happening to them, how they are feeling, what I’m seeing take place. It’s quite fascinating. Often, my characters take me on roads less travelled, and I find myself saying, “Wow, I never saw that coming!”
What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book?
I do foundational research once I have the idea, then extensive research as the story unfolds. All my books have extensive historical, geographical, and scientific research. I also incorporate scenes and settings from places I’ve visited or would like to visit.
That is what I love about your work , the research that has clearly been put into your stories it is really impressive! Do you have a set schedule for writing, or do you only write when you feel inspired?
I write daily. I’m finishing up the sequel to Infernal Gates, four chapters in to my 7th Thriller tentatively entitled Ghost Hunter, and just finished a short backstory for Infernal Gates I’ll be placing on my website for readers.
Do you read much and if so, who are your favorite authors?
I read extensively, both fiction and non-fiction. Favorite fiction authors include Daniel Silva, James Byron Huggins, James L. Rubart, Robert Whitlow, and Tolkien.
All wonderful authors! Lastly, when can we readers expect to read more wonderful books from you?
I’m finishing the sequel to Infernal Gates, entitled Devil’s Cauldron. Hope to have it out in late fall 2019 or early 2020.
