Grim Future, The Year is 2342 – reads the opening title of chapter one of Lia, Human of Utah. Lia, Human of Utah, is a book set in 2342, in a chilling, dystopian world that is relentless and harsh to survive. I admit, when I saw a redheaded woman on the cover of this book I already wanted to read it, I mean, how could I not being a redhead myself! But when I read the description of this book that uses words such as ‘intense violence’  and ‘mind-bending reveals,’ I was hooked and knew that this book was one I need to read asap. Lia, Human of Utah is a book that surprised me on more than one occasion, I adore dystopian novels, but sadly too many of them are similar, but this book stands out amongst the crowd. This is because the story is unpredictable and the reader is continually learning about what has happened to this world and who the protagonist of the novel is. Lia, Human of Utah absolutely is a book that enthralled me and so if you love dystopian then this book is a must read!

Lia, Human of Utah, opens with a sentence that had me already thinking of a hundred questions, the sentence reads ‘Liah woke from a deep sleep to find herself sprawled on a filthy concrete floor covered in places by indecipherable graffiti. She stood slowly, trying to get a sense of where she was’. This sentence had my mind racing for answers, I wanted to know who Lia was, why she was on the floor… why she could not make sense of her surroundings; the fact that I was able to be so invested straight away shows you readers that Greg Ramsay – the magnificent author – is a talented man who clearly knows how to write! Lia is the female protagonist and heroine of Lia, Human of Utah. Lia wakes up on the floor in a department store which is in ruin, only knowing her first name. Who is she? Where is she? And where is she going to go? Are questions that will race through the reader’s mind as well as hers. Soon Lia leaves the department store to be shocked that devastation has wrecked the planet. To make matters worse, she learns the hard way that survival is going to be tough in this brutal dystopian world in which horror is around every corner. Lia must use her instincts to survive, but she will also try to discover who she is and why she can’t remember who she is and what has happened. The premise of the novel is just this, it is a fascinating story, and if you adore mystery as well as post-apocalyptic fiction, then you must read this book. What is so great about this novel is that Lia, Human of Utah holds book one and two which is brilliant because I promise you that when you reach the end of book one, you will feel compelled to read book two straight away!

The story of Lia, Human of Utah is one that was genuinely shocking as well as disturbing. The brutal land we encounter is enough to leave even the bravest of people with nightmares, and this is all thanks to Greg Ramsay who is now of my most loved dystopian writers. There is something incredible about Ramsay, and I can’t put my finger on just what this is. Is it because he is able to captivate his reader early? Because he can compel you to read at an alarming rate? Or is it because his literature is perfectly executed… or maybe it is all three! What I do know is that Ramsay is a talented author; there are many quotes I love in this book, but this one is my favorite:

‘Lia stood over him, her power still raging around her. The fire red waves radiated from her like an angel of death’

The power of this one quote alone is astounding, and as I think of this quote and what happens after this event, all I want to do is pick up this powerful book again! Lia, Human of Utah, is an astounding read which is perfectly written with a great female protagonist. Lia’s narration jumps off the page and will ensure that readers are hooked by her story very early. Because this book has the power to grasp a reader very quickly, I have no choice but to award Lia, Human of Utah a brilliant Five Stars!

I enjoyed reading Aimee’s thoughts. This is a delightfully detailed review and I’m overjoyed she liked my work. I was inspired to write Lia as a character and her story when my first love proved, (at the time) to be the kind of strong female I respected. I wanted to take a strong character like that and explore her viewpoint as she’s thrown into a post-apocalyptic hellscape. Ultimately it seems I succeeded in making Lia the hero her story needs, but most importantly, a loving homage to the strength in those that inspired me. My two-book scifi horror epic collection… Read more »
