Kelly Artieri, Author Spotlight

Murder happens.

Not all murders are gory heinous crimes. Killing someone isn’t always done by a seasoned criminal.

Some are just passionate reactions to a situation, but it is murder just the same. Perfectly sane, responsible people can find themselves in the wrong places at the wrong times.

By the Water is a pithy collage of tasty morsels. Though the stories are short, each tale still packs a punch.

Everyone has a breaking point, what does it take for murder to happen?

Could it happen to you … by the water?

Thank you for joining us today at Red Headed Book Lover! Please tell us more about yourself

I’m an accidental author and a mixed bag of tricks. My writing career began from a soul searching journal after the loss of my family’s deaf Dalmatian. I never thought of it as a manuscript, it was just documentation outlining a life changing time. I felt who would want to read my words? Interestingly my words landed me my first traditional publishing contract, and those words became an award winning memoir. That book opened doors for me.

I have a casual writing style in tune with a dry sense of humor and I speak fluent sarcasm. I speak directly to the reader in a conversational way. It helps make my words personal.

In addition to my writing I’m a professional illustrator. I write and illustrate children’s books. My children’s books are considered as part of a diversity series dealing with real life obstacles. My books are designed to initiate parents to have a conversation with their children about acceptance and empathy for others. I feel a better world begins with these early dialogs. I also freelance illustrate other authors children’s books and do cover design.

Fast forward to murder mystery short stories. Stress release : ) I kill people (in writing of course)

Could you please tell us readers about your book and what inspired you to write your book?

I live by the water on Lake Ontario, so I can easily write what I know well. The allure and the strength of the water provides a blank pallet of nefarious opportunity. I love watching people and concocting stories in the moment.

I challenged myself with By the Water. Short stories are fun, but can be tough to build a scene and develop characters in a short amount of space. I wanted to write something believable, but a little thought provoking too. My goal was to prove that real everyday people can kill in small snippets and make it real. Life is really just a series of short stories.

What is your writing process like?

My writing process is very much like my writing style, casual. I write when I have something to say. I do keep a pad of paper beside my bed though to capture random thoughts I have in the middle of the night.

Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?

I read as much as possible. My favorite author is Robin Cook. Being a physician, his medical thrillers are believable and a little scary because they are.

Lastly, when can we readers expect to read more wonderful books from you?

I hope to release my next work in a few months. It will be a full length psychological thriller Rough Water, which will be set in Niagara Falls.
