Joshua is a Jesus Freak and follower of the Way. As an adventurous nerd, he loves the outdoors and when he’s not found high in the mountains of Alaska, he can be observed living on the rolling plains of eastern Montana with his wife, guns and two katanas. He has a passion for all things imaginary and finds inspiration in the wilderness, away from all the distractions of life. Some of his other passions include hunting, shooting, board and video games, hard rock, movies, reading and the Walking Dead.
He has won five awards for his best-selling Brother’s Creed series!

Thank you for joining us today at Red Headed Book Lover! Please tell us more about yourself
I’m a Christian who writes zombie books. If that doesn’t make you look at the screen funny then I don’t know what will. I’m also a husband, patriot, gun nut, hunter, and just a general outdoorsman.
Could you please tell us readers about your book and what inspired you to write your book?
My book, Outbreak, is the first in the Brother’s Creed series which follows two brothers as they try to survive the end of the world with their faith and humanity intact. There are five books in the series with the final one coming out soon. It has been an awesome ride writing these books! They are not anything new and fancy when it comes to the zombies, but the main characters are Christians which takes the story to an interesting level as they have to reconcile with what needs to be done to survive. My readers seem to love it, so I must be doing something right!
This series was inspired by a real life apocalypse plan my brother and I have incase SHTF. It then morphed into a standalone book that turned into the start of a series and here we are!
What would your advice be for aspiring writers?
I get this question a lot and I love answering it. There is so much that I’d tell someone, but if I could only say one thing, it’d be this: Don’t worry about what the market is at the moment or what publishers want. Instead, write what you love, books that you are passionate about. I would much rather read a book written by someone who was excited about what they wrote than one by an author chasing the market.
I write what I want to write and the readers will either enjoy it or not. You’ll never find me chasing the market, unless it’s with a book I’m excited about that just happens to be what people want at that time. Otherwise, I’ll be over here enjoying the book I’m writing, even if it flops!
In your opinion, what is the most important thing about a book?
Story, story, STORY! Do you get the picture? Hahaha.
Now when I say story I don’t mean just the plot, I mean the whole story the book tells. I can stick with a book if it has grammar errors or subpar writing, but I absolutely won’t finish a book if the story isn’t there. Ted Dekker put it best, “Story is a series of events involving worth characters who change as a result of those events.”
Meaning, if you have a good story with good characters that change as the story goes on, I’m in!
What is your writing process like?
I’m a pantser. So I usually start with a concept or maybe even a full story in my head and some notes written down (maybe a brief outline if I’m feeling frisky). Then I just go for it. Once I start, I write hard and fast, I don’t edit as I go (I actually turn my spellchecker off), I don’t look back or correct anything, I just get those words on the page. If I realize later on that I missed something, I will write down a note and keep going. It’s all about momentum and once you get that going, you don’t want to stop.
Do you have a set schedule for writing, or do you only write when you feel inspired?
I’m lucky in that my job is seasonal, so I have multiple months in a row where I don’t have to work. It allows me to make my own schedule. But I DO have a schedule and a daily goal. I have to or I don’t take it seriously. This is not just a hobby for me, I plan to make it into a career. So what I’ll do it set a date to be done and set a daily word count. I will do my best to hit that, but if life happens, as it always does, I will get done what I can but still live my life and be present with my family.
Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?
I used to read a lot, but have been slacking lately with all the writing. I still try and get through a book or two a month. Right I’m really digging, Larry Correia’s Monster Hunter International series and Nicholas Salisbury Smith’s Hell Divers. Oh, and my good buddy R.J. Batla’s Senturians of Terraunum series.
Some of my all-time favorite authors include: J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, R. A. Salvatore, Ted Dekker, Christopher Paolini, Brandon Sanderson, and Jay Posey.
When can we readers expect to read more wonderful books from you?
I LOVE this question! So I’ll be finishing up my first series (post-apocalyptic) in February then I’ll be shifting gears and starting on my fantasy trilogy I’ve been planning and world building for over a decade! That will be an awesome one. Then after that I’ll be going back to Post-apocalyptic!
As to when the next book will be out… I will have the last book in my Brother’s Creed series, Last Hope, out in February (maybe March) and then I plan to write the WHOLE fantasy trilogy before I publish it, so there may be a big break in there. BUT you will see more from me in the coming year, so stay tuned!
Lastly, what is the best way to stay in touch with you?
I have all the normal social media links but I’m most active on my Facebook page or in my Kickass Readers Guild Facebook Group. The absolutely best way is to sign up for my newsletter as you’ll then get exclusive first looks at my covers, sales, giveaways, and other fun stuff. ALSO you’ll get the free prequel ebook to my Brother’s Creed series when you sigh up. So that’s a win-win for both of us! Thanks for having me Aimee! I hope to be back here again with another interview when my next series is out!
