Innate, Eric Carter

The monotonous final day of Chance’s 6th grade year erupts when soldiers storm his school. Before anybody can make sense of what’s going on, Chance finds his brother boarding a bus and leaving with the very troops that turned his school to chaos. The authorities claim everything is OK, and families shouldn’t worry. But Chance isn’t so sure. He obviously won’t get the peaceful summer he had hoped for; the one he needed to help him get…better. While Chance wrestles with a new reality, a man appears; a man only Chance can see. He suggests Chance doesn’t need to get better. The man claims that Chance’s disability isn’t a weakness at all. In fact, it’s a power necessary to rescue his brother, and potentially the entire world. Will Chance shy away from the man’s ludicrous challenge, or will he take a leap of faith into an unknown world and explore the depths of himself in doing so?

Innate is a dramatic, thrilling, and exciting middle-grade novel that will keep readers entertained, captivated, and engrossed from the very first page. It has been a while since I, as well as my children! Been so captivated by a fantasy story and this is thanks to the exceptional author Eric Carter and his talented literature and so, if you are a reader who loves being taken on an adventure that is memorable as well as captivating, then Innate is for you!

Innate is a breathtaking middle-grade novel that will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the book, Chance whose world turns upside down on the final day of 6th grade. On this day, soldiers storm his school and take his brother, and Chance’s life from this moment changes drastically. Everyone is told that everything is ok but Chance is worried about his brother and wants life to return to normal. Soon, a man only Chance can see appears and tells him that his disability isn’t a weakness but a power and he needs to use it to rescue his brother and to save the world. What follows is a captivating, inspirational, and thrilling tale that should not be missed!

The story of Innate is excellent and incredibly well-developed thanks to Eric Carter, the author of the book. Carter manages to develop his world with immaculate detail; every event, character, and setting is well thought out and planned, and I was impressed by Carter’s flawless ability to do this. As I read Innate, I immediately was drawn into the book and felt captivated by Carter’s spellbinding literature. Carter’s writing is detailed in the most immaculate of ways but is never too confusing for children; the text is detailed but not too dense, it is beautifully written so that the reader will be able to immerse themselves in the story from the beginning to end without difficulty.

Not only is Eric Carter, a talented author for his descriptive powers, he is also a phenomenal writer thanks to his characterization of the protagonist of the novel Chance. Chance is a character every reader will be able to root for and will have many readers caring about him. Carter has essentially written a character study of Chance, and I adore this approach in literature because it makes the story even more immersive and entertaining for a reader.

Being able to accompany Chance on his journey was incredible and because Carter captivates his readers from the start, the reader will feel as if they are in the same situation as Chance. Innate is a truly immersive experience and so if you adore reading novels that you can be a part of then this story is for you!

As Innate is a dramatic, compelling and action-packed fantasy adventure that will entertain and delight readers for hours on end, I, of course, have to review this incredible book five stars! So please if you love fantasy stories that follow a strong protagonist while being taken on a memorable journey, then Innate is for you!
