I adore memoirs because they give the reader insight into a person’s fascinating life, but I love memoirs with travel themes (for example, ones that take us to a new country unfamiliar to us) because the reader is whisked away on a journey. If the author of such a memoir is brilliantly descriptive about the places they visit, the reader will feel as if they are right there experiencing every moment. Geri o Shimasu, written by the extraordinary Alia Luria, is just this type of read as it is an incredibly powerful memoir that whisks the reader away to Japan which feels as if you are side by side with Alia on her journey.
The reader, thanks to the author’s impeccable descriptions, will feel as if they are right there, which is rare for an author to accomplish. The fact that Alia has shown us, readers, that she is an incredibly talented author who knows how to transfix her readers with ease, is why I already have to implore you lovely readers to have a read of Geri o Shimasu because you will never come across another book like it! The result is an incredible insight into Japanese culture from a foreign perspective, showing us Alia’s highs and lows of her cultural immersion which makes for both eye-opening and entertaining moments! Alia shares her experiences with Japanese customs, onsen etiquette, food, and so much more! It makes for a relatable and entertaining read that will keep you hooked and immersed from the very beginning and the result is an incredibly honest memoir that shouldn’t be missed!
The profoundness too in Alia’s story is sensational, and many readers will feel a host of different emotions while reading this book because of how emotive and transformative Alia’s journey was. I found myself reading Geri o Shimasu at an alarming rate because it was captivating as well as engrossing; Alia’s remarkable literature will have you turning the pages at an alarming rate, and I adored how she was able to do this!
As well as Alia writing her story in an extremely compelling way, she also is excellent at describing the settings and places in this book. Alia’s beautifully descriptive writing of Japan will make the reader feel as if they are right there; this is how I felt, and because I did, I felt as if I was with Alia on her journey, and that for me was incredibly beautiful as well as transformative and informative.
To conclude my thoughts on this wonderful book, Geri o Shimasu is a remarkable, memorable, and informative story that readers are going to love, so I, of course, have to award this superb book five stars! So please, if you love memoirs, especially those with travel themes, then have a read of Geri o Shimasu; you will not regret it!
