Final Notice, Van Fleisher

What Would You Do If You Knew – For Certain – That You Had 10 Days To Live?

Some would get their legal affairs in order. Others would contact family, friends, lovers, ex-lovers. Some might take a trip or make an exceptional donation. Still others might clean the house and do the laundry. And some…might kill.

The year is the very near future. A brilliant young doctor and mathematician, Vijay Patel, has invented a new health/sport watch that monitors blood chemistry so accurately, it can actually predict when someone will die – within 10, 20, or 30 days. The intention of this “Final Notice,” as it is called, is to allow people to get their affairs in order and reach out to loved ones before it’s too late. But when those notified have easy access to a gun, the result is sometimes lethal for more than just the watch-owner.

These are the stories of several people who receive their Final Notice and their very different reactions…including a desire to get revenge with impunity. They range from an 89-year-old resident in a retirement home to a U.S. Senator…from a benevolent widow to a crass tycoon to a noted climate change scientist.

But in this fresh, fast-paced, political thriller, page-turner, their stories are all set against the all-too-recognizable backdrop of a guns-gone-wild America, and the relentless push by the NRA and their surrogate politicians to make guns even easier to acquire.

Their stories are also connected by the involvement of several likeable protagonists. These include: the inventor of the watch … the FBI agent charged with stopping the killings…and a recently retired, middle-class couple, Vince and Trudi Fuller, with their brave immigrant friends and a very endearing Corgi, Miles.

Vince and Trudi live happily in their “California bubble” until Vince is knocked down by a young punk in a parking lot. His sense of shame and rage, resulting from feelings of age-related vulnerability, triggers a first-time interest in guns. Trudi resists, but later, an unprovoked attack on Miles and Vince – and a growing friendship with two courageous Syrian refugees – changes her mind. With very unexpected consequences.

Final Notice is a chilling, exhilarating read that kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. Final Notice is addictive as well as enthralling; it engrossed me just from the description alone and when I did indeed start to read this story it thrilled me! The reader will follow several random people ranging from young to old, and all of them do very different things when they learn of their date, and this book lovers is the premise of the sensational Final Notice!

The plot of Final Notice is thrilling and incredibly clever. I am beyond impressed by Van Fleisher’s raw talent and how he managed to include so much depth into his novel flawlessly; no stone was left unturned, not even once. The pacing of his story too was immaculate, and so I applaud him for his incredible talent. The story is unlike anything I have read or heard of before. It is a unique thriller book that stands out amongst the crowd. This is because the story is wonderfully written and the plot perfectly executed. It is relentless, and that is how thriller books should be! I adore these kinds of books where they push the boundaries; it is daring, bold and frankly brilliant!  I always measure my likeness of a book on whether I find myself looking at the page number; if I do in fact do this, I know that the novel is taking its toll. However with Final Notice I never once found myself referring to the page number, and that is a sure sign that this book is a compelling piece of work that draws the reader in and captivates them to read it quickly!

Van Fleisher can only be described as a talented wordsmith; I adored his writing which felt as if it was spiked with adrenaline and I adored the multi-layers of this story. This thriller was packed full of great and informative depth which is rare for this genre in my opinion. Fleisher’s characters were simply electric. Their narratives jumped off the page and made me want to read until I could not anymore.

To summarise my thoughts on the sensational novel that is Final Notice; I would say if you are a reader who is looking for a brilliant, action-packed book with a fast-paced, intriguing plot and flawlessly executed characters then this excellent book is for you! Final Notice gets five stars from me book lovers!
