Di Di Mau, Darren Walton

In 1969, Darren Walton, at the tender age of nineteen, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, trading life in idyllic Marin County in California for the chaos of a raging jungle war in Southeast Asia. In no time, he got pressed into service as a member of a Marine reconnaissance unit operating near Da Nang, Vietnam.

There were a few times when he basked in the breathtaking beauty of the triple canopy jungle, the contoured glistening mountain ridges, and the luscious green valleys. But there were many, many other times when he and his fellow Marines labored under the terror of the worst the jungle had to offer: torrential monsoons, torturous humidity, rapacious insects, and enemy-placed punji traps springing from hell below.

Darren survived thanks to the unconditional loyalty and courage of his fellow Marines, men who risked their own lives to save his, men who demonstrated uncommon courage in the most desperate of circumstances. No questions asked. No conditions imposed. No social barriers erected. Semper Fidelis.

Di Di Mau is Darren’s unabashed personal account of warfare, survival, and brotherhood—and the enduring reflections that followed. It is unlike any book about the Vietnam War.

Di Di Mau is a moving, poignant, and thought-provoking memoir courtesy of the author Darren Walton who shares his journey in the Marine Corps. What the reader will read is eye-opening as well as incredibly shocking but also moving. That is why I already have to recommend that you lovely readers have a read of Di Di Mau; however, if you need more convincing then continue to read to learn more about this memorable book.

Di Di Mau is an enlightening, honest, and poignant memoir courtesy of an exceptional man. Darren Walton’s tale is harrowing, poignant, and inspiring in how he shares his story and he will take his readers on the journey of his life in the Marine Corps, focusing on his time served in Vietnam.

Darren Walton shares that in 1969 at the age of 19, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, and was thrown into the depths of the jungle – a far crime from his home in California. It is here that he experienced many ups and downs with his team, serving in a Marine reconnaissance unit in Vietnam. Darren expresses there were many days he was basking in the beauty of the jungle but how he experienced the worst the jungle had to offer too from monsoons, traps, and more. Darren and his fellow Marines however tried hard to survive against the odds and risked their lives to save each other. The result of this is a touching, personal, and honest tale about warfare and brotherhood during the time of the Vietnam War and this book lovers is the short premise of the incredible Di Di Mau!

Darren Walton’s story is one of the most shocking but poignant stories I have ever read. Walton’s journey is upsetting at points, and although the events throughout this book are hard-hitting, the primary feeling associated with this book is inspiration, as Walton is brave to share his story and be open and honest about all he felt along the way. It takes a lot for a person to be this open and honest and so I admire that about Walton.

Darren Walton is an incredible man for many reasons, but one of the reasons he is so wonderful is that he brazenly shares his story to help inform people and to speak his truth. I adore how Walton did not hold back on the details of hardships, he poignantly writes about all the difficulties he has endured, and it makes for profound reading.

Overall Di Di Mau is an incredibly poignant and honest tale. It takes a lot for a person to be so honest and to tell their tale so I admire Walton for doing just this and sharing his tale. As Di Di Mau is one of the most incredible memoirs I have ever read, I have no choice but to award this incredible book a dazzling five stars as it truly deserves it!
