Distraught from recent tragedy, Meredith Jaynes takes pity on a young girl who steals from her. Meredith discovers “Bean” lives in a hovel mothering her two younger sisters. The three appear to have been abandoned. With no other homes available, Social Services will separate the siblings. To keep them together, Meredith agrees to foster them on a temporary basis.
Balancing life as a soap maker raising goats in rural Tennessee proved difficult enough before the siblings came into her care. Without Bean’s help, she’d never be able to nurture these children warped by drugs and neglect—let alone manage her goats that possess the talents of Houdini. Harder still is keeping her eccentric family at bay.
Social worker Parker Snow struggles to overcome the breakup with his fiancée. Burdened by his inability to find stable homes for so many children who need love, he believes placing the abandoned girls with Meredith Jaynes is the right decision. Though his world doesn’t promise tomorrow, he hopes Meredith’s does.
But she knows she’s too broken.
Borrowed Lives is an exceptional book written by Carol McClain and wow, what a stellar book! Borrowed Lives for me was moving, captivating and addictive right from the start and I felt this from beginning to end. Borrowed Lives was captivating to me from the start thanks to the premise of the story and the bewitching literature courtesy of the author, Carol McClain who from the start hooked me with her fantastic story that was unlike anything I have read before. It is rare to find a novel that combines the themes this book does, and that is refreshing to me. That is why I already recommend this book, however, if you need more convincing then continue to read more to learn about Borrowed Lives!
Borrowed Lives is an exceptional novel that will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the book, Meredith Jaynes. Meredith’s life has been turned upside down lately due to tragedy and because she herself knows how hard life is, she takes pity on a young girl that steals from her and when she does, her world and there’s will change forever. This is because the young girl has two younger sisters, all three have been abandoned and are struggling to survive and so she agrees to foster them for the meantime. When she does she will find her life enriched in a way she didn’t before and this book lovers is the short premise of the incredible Borrowed Lives!
The premise of Borrowed Lives is exceptional, original and unlike anything, I have read before. I loved the many themes and elements explored throughout the book, and all themes are explored by Carol McClain wonderfully, and she does this by lacing these interesting themes throughout the text flawlessly and weaving them with the story. The result of this makes Borrowed Lives a highly addictive and fascinating read that is never once lackluster or predictable.
Carol McClain is a phenomenal writer who knows how to grasp her reader’s attention from the first page. McClain instead of writing long, drawn-out builds up which are commonly found in novels, decides to ditch this approach and thrust her reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach, what is the point of having a long build-up with little excitement? This is only necessary if the author in question can’t develop the characters in the story quickly, but with Borrowed Lives, the reader, will not encounter this issue because McClain instantly develops her characters and makes the reader invest in not only them but also their journey.
Overall Borrowed Lives is a moving, compelling and thought-provoking novel that will easily entertain readers for many days and nights and so I, of course, have to award this stellar gem of a book five stars! So be sure to have a read of the book preview below, you won’t regret it!
