The Stories Behind Arizona’s High School Sports Venues

Do you know who your high school football stadium is named after? Or the gym? Or the school itself?

What is rapidly becoming lost Arizona history is captured in these fascinating stories about the names behind high schools and their sports venues.

After officiating high school football and baseball in Arizona for nearly 30 years, it occurred to Scott Hanson that there was a piece of Arizona history that was slipping away: the who and the why high schools, their football stadiums, baseball fields and gymnasiums were named. So he began researching to find the answers. He talked to athletic directors, administrators, alumni, librarians, local historians, long-time school employees, relatives of those honored, the honorees themselves and anyone else who may have known the people whose names adorn the buildings and fields across Arizona.

Who Is Gym? Is a unique but brilliant informational book that is a great book that preserves the history of a beloved state. Who Is Gym? Is a guide to the high schools, and sports venues of Arizona… you may be thinking “why would this be interesting?” because sure, it is a unique topic and if you do not usually read books from this genre you may think that it was an outlandish book but it is actually fascinating, and you would have to read the book to understand this. Who Is Gym? Is written by Scott Hanson and in his book he takes his readers on tour through Arizona, having a look at high schools, football stadiums, baseball fields and so on. The book not only explores the buildings themselves and the history behind them but also the names behind them because, like many high schools and buildings, they are named after somebody who has done something exceptional. The exploration into this and the names behind the buildings will take readers on an extraordinary journey through history in which the reader is given an in-depth amount of knowledge on the history of Arizona which is all explored through the buildings.

The book Who Is Gym? Is an exceptional one that impressed me from beginning to end with its incredible knowledge and expert writing. From the offset, I knew that this book was well researched, after all, the author Scott Hanson has officiated ‘high school football and baseball in Arizona for nearly 30 years’. When Scott did this, he soon realized that this history needs to be preserved and learned and that is why he has compiled all of this incredible information in Who Is Gym? For us readers to enjoy.

From beginning to end I found myself entertained by Who Is Gym? And the rich history laced throughout the book. I love history, and I love Arizona so to read about it, and its buildings were actually pretty incredible, and it was made even more incredible by Scott Hanson’s exceptional writing. Scott Hanson from beginning to end writes his novel in an easy to read way that informs the reader but never bombards them with too much information. This is important with an educational book because if the text is too confusing, it can deter readers. With Who Is Gym? That is never an issue because from the start readers will know that the book is going to be an entertaining and fun, informative read that they won’t forget for a long time.

Aimee Ann, Thank you so much for the kind words about”Who Is Gym?” You are so correct in identifying my passion for Arizona high school sports. For those who had such an impact on there communities to have a school, stadium, gym or other facility named after them, — we owe it to them to not let those legacies slip away. “Who Is Gym?” is available at
