What makes a nation believe a lie?
That’s the question Stephenson has been trying answer ever since the 1938 Orson Welles scare convinced millions of Americans that the world was ending.
Strangely when the scientific community released its study on the phenomenon they said it would never happen again.
But they were wrong.
After the third incident of a media broadcast led to the panic of millions they gave it a name; a Sky Fall Event.
As Stephenson works to stop these events from ever happening again, another group has realized their potential for wealth and power.
If they can cause mass hysteria they know where local stock market will crash. If they can evacuate cities with widespread panic, they can sell the weapon to the highest bidding government.
In 1988 one of the worst Events in history occurred on the Portuguese coast. In the mass evacuation people were trampled and stores looted. But this time it was no accident.
Members of the CIA were testing the weapon. Now, Stephenson must unravel the secrets of the Sky Fall before they use it again.
Wow, When the Sky Falls … where do I begin? Why don’t I start my review by writing that When the Sky Falls is a thrilling novel that is not only worthy of being read by all readers but also a novel that needs to be a movie. When I read the description of When the Sky Falls I was hooked, after all, I love thriller novels and love even more when they have a twist, so I was hooked and ready to go. However, when I started to read When the Sky Falls, I was shocked by just how good the literature and the story was and so I raced through this novel desperate to find out what would happen to the protagonists I had grown to love. Every now and then a reader will come across that one book that blows them away, it is a somewhat generic term, but that is what When the Sky Falls did to me… it blew me away and ever since completing it I have been thinking of its intricate and detailed story and how I need to re-read it! That is when you know book lovers that you have come across an incredible book when you are thinking of it when you have a million things to do. That is why I am already going to recommend When the Sky Falls to you lovely readers, and yes, it may be early on in my review, but When the Sky Falls is a novel not to be missed.
When the Sky Falls will take the reader back to 1988 and will introduce the reader to something known as a ‘Sky Fall’ event. A Sky Fall event is essentially an event where somebody or an organization convinces the public that the world is ending when it is in fact not and the purpose of this is either for power or wealth and When the Sky Falls explores this. The reader will be introduced to the protagonist of the novel, William Stephenson who has spent his whole life studying Sky Fall events and why they happen. William has been studying the latest suspected Sky Fall event in Portugal and this forces him to team up with the CIA to learn more. However, Sky Fall events happen for a reason and so nobody can be trusted as somebody or some persons may have a motive and this sets a dangerous precedent and this book lovers is the premise of the sensational When the Sky Falls.
When the Sky Falls for me was thrilling, captivating and addictive right from the start and I felt this from beginning to end. When the Sky Falls was captivating to me from the start thanks to the unique premise of the story and the bewitching literature courtesy of the author, Joseph Bendoski who hooked me with his unique story that was unlike anything I have read before. It is rare to find a thriller/historical fiction novel that is refreshing, and it is even more challenging to discover a thriller story that does not rely on gimmicks and ridiculous action sequences! When the Sky Falls does have some action-packed moments however they are tasteful and in no way gimmicky which is always fantastic in a book!
Joseph Bendoski is a phenomenal writer who knows how to grasp his reader’s attention from the first page. Bendoski instead of writing long, drawn-out builds up which are commonly found in thriller novels, decides to ditch this approach and thrust his reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach, what is the point of having a long build-up with little excitement? This is only necessary if the author in question can’t develop the characters in the story quickly but with Bendoski, the reader will not encounter this issue because Bendoski instantly develops his characters and makes the reader invest in not only them but also their journey.
Overall When the Sky Falls is a thrilling, compelling and thought-provoking novel that will easily entertain readers for many days and nights and so, I, of course, have to award this stellar gem of a book five stars!
