A humorous, unconventional family yarn about a young girl navigating a hardscrabble upbringing in northern Mississippi. Meet Tupelo Honey. She divinely lays out the framework and quirky intricacies of growing up in a house only “slightly better than an orphanage,” her days spent chattering with imaginary friend Moochi, and navigating sleepovers at her pious, curmudgeonly grandmother Marmalade and mentally unstable Uncle Randall’s ramshackle house. Things change when her mother, a callous, irresponsible junkie, brings home Nash, a paranoid local drug dealer whom Tupelo surprisingly bonds with during treacherous expeditions to New York and Mexico. Through bong smoke-filled hallways at home, the pageantry of kiddie beauty contests, Sunday School, and spying on Nash burying his stockpiles of drug money in the backyard, Tupelo somehow survives. Eventually, her mother replaces Nash with another man who lives in Los Angeles, and a heartbroken Tupelo begins resenting the unsettled nature of her life. After her grandmother dies, child welfare places Tupelo in a group foster home. A loveable, engaging, original voice, Tupelo brightens this accomplished tale of dysfunction in a family where “nothing had ever been right.
Tupelo Honey is a unique, moving and memorable piece of contemporary literature that is written beautifully by the excellent author Lis Anna-Langston. Tupelo Honey is a poignant book with many moving themes because it features a dysfunctional family and the disturbing events that unfold throughout their lives, particularly the life of the protagonist of the novel, Tupelo. When I read the description of Tupelo Honey, I was instantly hooked because I adore contemporary fiction especially when the story deals with hard-hitting themes that are sometimes hard to read but also important to read at the same time. When I started to read Tupelo Honey, I knew straight away that this was going to be a story I would not be able to forget for a long time. From the beginning to the end the story that unraveled was sensational and compelled me to read; so, I, of course, am already going to recommend that you lovely readers have a read of this book! However, if you need more convincing then continue to read to learn more about this gem of a book!
Tupelo Honey follows the young protagonist of the novel called Tupelo in the 1970’s in the south of America. Tupelo does not have a normal childhood, her mother is a drug addict with a mean spirit, and her mother hurts Tupelo both physically and emotionally. Tupelo’s mother one day brings home a new man called Nash and Nash, despite being involved in crime is kind to Tupelo. Tupelo over the course of the story grows closer to him, he is the only person who is kind to her, but Tupelo’s mother keeps pushing him away, and one day they go far away from Nash, and it will force Tupelo to pick up the pieces of her broken life once again. What follows is a heart-breaking, moving and memorable story that will delight as well as move its readers for hours on end.
The story of Tupelo Honey is not one for the faint-hearted thanks to its poignant, sometimes harrowing themes but if you can cope with themes of addiction, drugs, and abuse, then you will be ok with the story. Never before have I read such a poignant account of what it was like in some more deprived parts of the country. I admit that I have not read many books that deal with the topics explored in the book, but this is because there are not many of them around and I believe this is because it is a somewhat ‘taboo’ topic that authors run away from. That is why I am incredibly impressed with the author Lis Anna-Langston for exploring poignant themes throughout her book because she is not only entertaining her readers with her compelling story but also informing them of core events in real lives and the reality of what happens in the world.
Lis Anna-Langston is an author whose work I have grown to love ever since reading Tupelo Honey. Tupelo Honey was such an incredible story that I immediately became addicted to her literature, and so that is why I am pleased to be sharing it with you lovely readers today. Langston clearly has a passion for sharing not commonly or openly discussed topics with her readers; Langston shares these themes with her readers through the story, and the characters and the result is an eye-opening, thought-provoking book.
Not only is Lis Anna-Langston a fantastic author for exploring such topics but she is also an excellent writer who knows how to grab and hold her reader from the start, even when tricky issues are discussed. You have to be careful when writing about themes that are upsetting as well as brutal because if you do not write about them correctly, there is a fear that the reader could stop reading. Langston, however, is a master storyteller and knows precisely how to write her book so that readers are entertained from beginning to end and read without hesitation.
