Topaz and the Green Fairies, Pat Frayne

Action & Adventure, Children & Picture Book, Fantasy, Magic & Sword and Sorcery, Middle Grade Fiction, Myth's & Legends

For once in his young life he had a sense of self-reliance and what a responsibility that truly was. Whatever happened to him on this journey had the power to make him stronger. Or he could let it destroy him.” Such are the thoughts of young Bozel, a pivotal new character introduced in Topaz and the Green Fairies, the third installment in the Tales of Topaz the Conjure Cat series by Pat Frayne. In this latest high adventure story we journey to an island in the midst of chaos. Severe storms are threatening to obliterate the home where the Green Fairies have lived for generations. It is up to young Bozel to find help to save his people before they perish. Along the way he encounters numerous obstacles and life changing situations. Bozel must overcome not only his own personal fears and self-doubt, but grave danger as well.

At the same time there is trouble for Topaz and the other inhabitants of Knownotten Kingdom. Otis has been injured and is trapped in a desolate land where he finds himself held in the thrall of a sinister creature. When Bozel finally crosses paths with Topaz and his friends the race is on to hatch a daring plan to save the Green Fairies. Topaz will be faced with the ultimate test of strength, courage and commitment to others.

Topaz and the Green Fairies is book three in the ‘Topaz the Conjure Cat’ series written by the exceptional and talented author Pat Frayne and wow what a stellar third book! Topaz and the Green Fairies is a book I was keen to read ever since discovering it because I always love to find adorable, heart-warming and inspiring adventure/fantasy stories for my children to read so when I discovered Topaz and the Green Fairies I thought ‘is this finally the perfect book?!’. Now that I have finished Topaz and the Green Fairies I can happily write that yes it is book lovers. Topaz and the Green Fairies is one of the most well written and well-developed stories I have ever come across, and I genuinely mean this. It is the sad truth that many children books are not written to a high standard, and I understand why some authors may write their children’s book this way because after all, children mostly want a fast-paced story, however, this is not always the best option. The child will most likely enjoy the story however they won’t remember it. Personally, as a mother I look for children books which my children will remember and want to re-read, and Topaz and the Green Fairies is that book Topaz and the Green Fairies is an expertly written children’s book with a story that is well developed and memorable and a story that I guarantee children with love thanks to its fast-paced but engaging narrative and the sensational story that unfolds.

Topaz and the Green Fairies is an adorable but exciting children’s book that is the perfect blend of fantasy and adventure and will take the reader of the story into a magical world full of fairies and magic galore. Topaz and the Green Fairies is the third book in the series, and although it could technically be read as a stand-alone, I would say it is best for a child to start with book one first so that they can become well accustomed to the land and the characters the reader meets. Besides, readers will be so hooked by the third book that they will want to read the first two anyway! Topaz and the Green Fairies will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the novel, Bozel, a young fairy whose home is being threatened thanks to raging storms and evil forces. The near destruction of his home sets Bozel on a quest to save his home, and this journey he goes on is a daring one, full of many obstacles along the way but the obstacles Bozel faces only makes him a better person, develops his character and instils incredible life lessons in him which will resonate with those who read Topaz and the Green Fairies.

The story of Topaz and the Green Fairies is a thrilling one thanks to the enthralling and action-packed moments as well as the unpredictable nature of the book that will have the readers turning the pages with haste from beginning to end. I love children books that involve a journey because usually in these stories the character develops and grows as they overcome events and battles which in turn adds to the development of the character and explores life lessons throughout the book and that is most certainly the case with Topaz and the Green Fairies. What I loved most about Topaz and the Green Fairies is that the reader is taken on an adventure that is continuously evolving and changing.

Pat Frayne is an incredible writer who knows how to capture young readers attention from the start. Frayne does this by placing the reader in the thick of the drama straight away with no long build up. The reader will be thrust into the story and because the reader experiences this so fast they will be hooked and captivated to read until the very end. Frayne manages to ensure that her readers are entertained from beginning to end, and she does this by weaving twists and turns throughout her book as well as many jaw-dropping moments that will fascinate as well as excite young readers.

Pat Frayne is an incredibly talented author who clearly knows how to write unique but engaging stories. It was evident to me from the start that Frayne is a passionate writer who surely loves entertaining children with her literature and putting a smile on children’s faces. I loved this about the author but what I loved the most about Frayne’s writing is her remarkable descriptions because they genuinely amazed me. Fantasy novels, in general, are difficult to write because you have to transport the reader quickly and effortlessly, but sadly this is rarely accomplished in a fantasy story but not with Topaz and the Green Fairies. Topaz and the Green Fairies is the way it is because Frayne knows what she is doing! Frayne knows how to whisk her readers away to a fantasy land and entice them with magnificent descriptions and keep children entertained from start to finish!

Overall Topaz and the Green Fairies is a marvelous, stellar and supreme children’s book that will entertain, delight as well as charm young readers and so I, of course, have to award this book five stars!
