The Sun Still Shines: How a Brain Tumor Helped Me See the Light, Jodi Orgill Brown

Health & Well Being, NonFiction, Religion & Spirtuality, Self-Help & Motivational

In a candid and witty memoir, Jodi recounts how her life was transformed when, as a thirty-three-year-old wife and mother, she was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Unwilling to accept her new fate, Jodi’s family searches for a doctor who will join their fight against the odds. But when the surgery that could save her life thrusts her into battle with a devastating spinal fluid leak and facial paralysis, even her own children fear her new appearance and physical failings. Jodi perseveres, even with an injured body and spirit. Interweaving the inspiring, provoking, and sometimes disturbing, Jodi reveals the hells and highs of her journey as she fights for hope and purpose—and life.

A short while ago I read and reviewed a book titled Rise Above Depression: Encouragement and Tips From Those Who Do It Every Day and my verdict was that Rise Above Depression is “an inspirational, poignant and uplifting book that will help many readers rise above depression.” Jodi Orgill Brown is the author of Rise Above Depression and the author of the book I am reviewing today. The Sun Still Shines: How a Brain Tumor Helped Me See the Light is one of the most inspiring, harrowing and incredible memoirs I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Once in a while a reader will come across a memoir that will evoke strong feelings in them and command them to change the way they think about life and The Sun Still Shines was that memoir for me, and I hope it will be for you too.

The Sun Still Shines is a poignant memoir written by the talented Jodi Orgill Brown. Jodi throughout her memoir will take her readers on a journey through her life and most importantly, the diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor at the tender age of just thirty-three. Jodi is a mother and wife so of course, the news was devastating to both Jodi and her family, however, upon Jodi’s diagnosis she decided that she would not accept that her brain tumor was inoperable and give up hope. With Jodi’s drive and determination to be better, not only for herself but for her family, she finds a new doctor who is willing to operate. Upon Jodi having her operation she will endure more hardships as she will soon be battling for her life due to a spinal fluid leak as well as coming to terms with facial paralysis. Jodi discusses these events and much more in an honest way which will evoke many feelings in its readers. Despite Jodi’s battle and the hardships she has endured, she has remained positive and continues to be optimistic about life as well as help those that need to be supported through her work. Although The Sun Still Shines is sometimes harrowing thanks to the grueling experiences Jodi faced, it is also an inspirational story in which Jodi’s spirit and positivity shine and so I implore all of you lovely readers to read The Sun Still Shines.

Jodi Orgill Brown’s story touched as well as moved me, and I believe it will move everybody who reads this book, in particular parents and those who have been in similar situations to Jodi’s. As I am a mother Jodi’s story touched me because Jodi is a mother too and I can’t even begin to imagine the pain she and her family has gone through. As I read Jodi’s book, I could feel Jodi’s love for her family laced throughout her words and this was a beautiful, memorable quality that readers will be able to notice and appreciate.

Jodi Orgill Brown truly is an exceptional woman and I honestly mean this. Never before have I encountered a story such as Jodi’s; her story is harrowing, and the experiences she has endured are heartbreaking but despite all of this, Jodi managed to keep positive and fight and these qualities that she possesses, will be an inspiration to all readers.

The Sun Still Shines is a moving memoir that is laced with heart, inspiration and determination and so, I have to award this stellar read five stars as it indeed is one of the best memoirs I have had the pleasure of reading. Jodi’s story will inspire, move and captivate her readers and so I hope all of those that have not yet read The Sun Still Shines read this book as it will leave a lasting impression on you.

Thank you for this lovely review! Life is rarely easy, but it is definitely brighter when we choose to see the good. I am grateful and humbled to read your review. I found writing my memoir to be therapeutic, as well as painful, helpful, healing and exhausting. It is my hope that it will resonate with readers and give others HOPE to press on through the battles of life. Many thanks for the kind words!
