RED HEADED BOOK LOVER

The Meek, J.D. Palmer

Action & Adventure, Dystopian & Post Apocalyptic, Fantasy, Literature & Fiction, Science Fiction & Space Opera

The world didn’t end with a religious war, or a race war, or an economic collapse. It didn’t end with everyone blowing each other up with nuclear warheads and it didn’t end with a natural disaster. It didn’t end because someone got offended in one of the million petty squabbles that were real, or fake, or imagined.
It ended quietly.
Harlan is visiting his friend in Los Angeles when people start dying. His friend, the neighbors, the entire city falls victim to an unknown disease. Except for Harlan.
Or so he thinks.
And he learns quickly that just because there are other survivors, not all are to be trusted. Finding himself in a world filled with broken spirits and hidden motives, he must navigate through a darkening landscape fraught with violence and despair as he desperately tries to get home to the love of his life, Jessica, and the child she is carrying. Morality becomes blurred as Harlan is forced to commit questionable acts to protect himself and those around him.

The Meek is a novel I was desperate to read ever since discovering it and caught my attention right away thanks to its description which alludes to a strange and unknown disease which intrigued me. Every now and then a reader will come across that one book that blows them away, it is a somewhat generic term, but that is what The Meek did to me… it blew me away and ever since completing it I have been thinking of its intricate and detailed story and how I need to re-read it! That is when you know book lovers that you have come across an incredible book when you are thinking of it when you have a million things to do. That is why I am already going to recommend The Meek to you lovely readers, and yes, it may be early on in my review, The Meek is a novel not to be missed.

The Meek for me was thrilling, captivating and addictive right from the start and I felt this from beginning to end. The Meek was captivating to me from the start thanks to the unique premise of the story and the bewitching literature courtesy of the author, J.D. Palmer who from the start hooked me with his unique story that was unlike anything I have read before. It is rare to find a dystopian novel that is refreshing and explores a subject that is not commonly discussed or heard of, and it is even more challenging to discover a dystopian story that does not rely on gimmicks and ridiculous action sequences! The Meek does have action-packed moments however they are tasteful and in no way gimmicky which is always fantastic in a book!

The Meek is a remarkable novel that will introduce the reader to the protagonist of the novel, Harlan. Harlan is visiting a friend in Los Angeles when people start to get sick with an unknown but terrible disease. However, Harlan has not been infected and he is unsure why. The reader will follow Harlan as he navigates the new tricky and terrifying landscape in which he lives and learns quick. Harlan quickly learns that even survivors are not to be trusted and to always watch your back amongst the turbulent and violent landscape he now finds himself in. The reader will follow Harlan as he tries to navigate through this landscape to get back to his pregnant girlfriend, Jessica. What follows is a thrilling novel that will excite as well as terrify you from start to finish!

The premise of The Meek is exceptional, original and unlike anything I have read before. I loved the many themes and elements explored throughout the book and all themes are explored by Palmer wonderfully, and he does this by lacing these interesting themes throughout the text flawlessly and weaving them with the story. The result of this makes The Meek a highly addictive and fascinating read that is never once lackluster or predictable. Palmer really has accomplished the near impossible, Palmer has managed to write an entertaining, bewitching and flawless story that will perfectly unfold in readers minds like a movie and now that I think about it, why is this book not a movie already!

J.D. Palmer is a phenomenal writer who knows how to grasp his reader’s attention from the first page. Palmer instead of writing long, drawn-out builds up which are commonly found in dystopian novels, decides to ditch this approach and thrust his reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach, what is the point of having a long build-up with little excitement? This is only necessary if the author in question can’t develop the characters in the story quickly but with The Meek, the reader will not encounter this issue because Palmer instantly develops his character and makes the reader invest in not only them but also their journey.

Palmer is not only a brilliant writer for his ability to captivate the reader’s attention straight away, but he is also an excellent author for his ability to lace exceptional twists and turns throughout his story that genuinely had me shocked at points! The combination of Palmer’s shocking twists and his explanatory powers will immerse the reader in the story and make them be able to visualize every detail, no matter how small. This writing approach is one of my favorites because it makes the reader feel included in the story and make the reader feel as if they are in the same situation as the protagonist of the novel.

Overall The Meek is a thrilling, compelling and thought-provoking novel that will easily entertain readers for many days and nights and so I of course, have to award this stellar gem of a book five stars!
