The Longest Trail: A True Story, Roni McFadden

Coming of Age, Grief & Hardship, Memoir & Biography, NonFiction, Spirituality & Philosophy

At 14 years old, Roni McFadden was already headed for trouble. When her mother divorced Roni’s abusive step-father, whatever closeness existed between mother and daughter disappeared. The only thing that Roni had left in her life with any meaning was her little horse Sparol. When she met an old cowboy who lived down the road, she saw they shared the same love and respect for those magnificent animals. More importantly, that old cowboy was an adult she could trust. Under his guidance, Roni evolves from a girl stumbling along treacherous and twisted paths to become a strong young woman who knows where she is going, how to get there, and that she will have help along the way.

The Longest Trail: A True Story written by author Roni McFadden is undoubtedly one of the most moving, beautiful and transfixing stories I have come across in a long time. Every now and then a reader will come across that one book that manages to move them more than any other, and that is how I felt with The Longest Trail and why it is now one of my favorite coming of age stories. The Longest Trail is, in fact, a true story, and when I learned this I knew I had to read it because one)I love memoirs!) and two) I adore coming of age stories and any stories that involve beautiful horses is a book I will read!

The Longest Trail is an inspiring book written by Roni McFadden and throughout the book, she will take her readers on a moving journey in which a lot of life lessons are learned. Roni at the tender age of fourteen had encountered hardship because of her abusive stepfather, however once day Roni met a cowboy and this is the start of her coming of age. It is from this point in the book and this encounter that Roni starts to grow as a person and this is thanks to the many lessons she learned from the cowboy. The lessons she learned was not only about horses (they both had a passion for them!) but also about life because the cowboy would guide her and that is really beautiful. What is also not mentioned much in the description of the book is that Roni has spirits that guide her and to read about this was mesmerizing. Roni on her journey found herself being guided by the spirits and they helped her along her way and helped her become the strong and incredible, kind woman she is today and that for me was so beautiful and inspiring. Throughout The Longest Trail Roni poignantly shares the journey she encountered during those years and the result is a beautiful, inspiring and moving coming of age book that should not be missed by anybody.

As a reader who adores memoirs and coming of age stories, I have read a lot but for some reason, The Longest Trail sticks out for me, and I think it is thanks to the compelling literature courtesy of Roni but also her honesty and the fact that she openly shares all that she encountered. Roni’s honesty, wisdom and passion for horses will charm, move and compel readers to read for many hours on end (I know I did!) and it will also stay in readers minds for a long time afterward. Never before have I found myself so enchanted by a book of this nature and this is all thanks to Roni’s captivating personality and her ability to suck the reader into her story and take them on her journey alongside her. I love stories in which I feel right beside the author so to be apart of Roni’s journey and to learn alongside her was truly beautiful and a reading experience I won’t forget for a long time.

Roni McFadden is an incredible woman who I admire so much. There is much I admire about Roni but one of the core attributes is the fact that she has told her story and so beautifully so. Literature is an art form for me and it is there for stories to be told and shared and a story such as Roni’s should be shared thanks to her wisdom and so I am so happy that she has done so!

Not only is Roni a wonderful woman for sharing her story but she also is thanks to her beautiful literature laced throughout her book. Memoirs and coming of age stories only work if the author in question is open, honest, brazen and passionate and Roni is all of this and so much more and that is why her book is so incredibly great!

Overall The Longest Trail is a beautiful, moving and inspiring book and so I have no choice but to award this stellar book five stars! So please book lovers, if you are looking for a memorable book then have a read of The Longest Trail and be transported back in time… you will not regret it!
