The Land without Color, Benjamin Ellefson

Action & Adventure, Children & Picture Book, Fantasy, Middle Grade

What If You Were Transported to a Land Without Color? And the Only One Who Could Restore it Was You?

When Alvin gets a mysterious pack of gum for his birthday, he, of course, blows a bubble as large as he can. But when that bubble carries him away to a far-off land where everything is gray, he’s in for the adventure of his life, and more than a little danger.

Because he’s the only one who can restore the Kingdom of Color to its former glory. To do it, Alvin has to battle man-eating plants, outsmart the bumbling Crimson Guards, cross the Sugar Dessert, overcome the two-headed dragon, and find the color-stealing goblins. It’s dangerous. Scary. Impossible! But it’s the only way to restore color to the kingdom.

The Land without Color is one of the most well written and well-developed stories I have ever come across, and I genuinely mean this. It is the sad truth that many children books are not written to a high standard, and I understand why some authors may write their children’s book this way because after all, children mostly want a fast-paced story and to look at colorful pictures, however, this is not always the best option. The child will most likely enjoy the story however they won’t remember it. Personally, as a mother I look for children books which my children will remember and want to re-read, and The Land without Color is that book. The Land without Color is an expertly written children’s book with a story that is well developed and memorable and a story that I guarantee children with love thanks to its fast-paced but engaging narrative and the sensational story that unfolds. If you are a parent or know children in your family or friendship groups and want the child to read an engaging story which they won’t be able to stop thinking about, then The Land without Color is that book! The book is a delight, and Benjamin Ellefson perfectly excites and charms his young readers from start to finish, and that is why I have to recommend this book to all children. However! If you need more convincing, then continue to read to learn more about this remarkable book that should not be missed!

The Land without Color is a highly imaginative story that will introduce its readers to the protagonist of the tale Alvin. Alvin is a young boy who one day on his birthday receives a pack of gum and children love gum! And so he opens the pack and starts to chew, but the gum he has received is no ordinary chewing gum, instead, it is magical because when Alvin blows a bubble with the gum the gum transports him to a magical land called the Kingdom of Color. However, upon arrival Alvin will discover that this Kingdom is not what it used to be; instead, it has lost all of its color and Alvin is the key to bringing the color back. The reader will follow Alvin on his journey across the magical place full of deadly things such as ‘man-eating plants’ ‘two-headed dragon’s’ and even ‘color-stealing goblins.’ What follows is a magical, dangerous but definitely exciting adventure which will see Alvin in his quest to restore color to the Kingdom and this book lovers is the premise of the sensational story.

The story of The Land without Color is a thrilling one thanks to the enthralling and action-packed moments as well as the unpredictable nature of the book that will have the readers turning the pages with haste from beginning to end. From the description of The Land without Color alone I was hooked… how could I not be?! The description involves a magical land and a quest which takes the reader on a magical but dangerous journey. I love children books that involve a journey because usually in these stories the character develops and grows as they overcome events and battles which in turn adds to the development of the character and explores life lessons throughout the book and that is most certainly the case with The Land without Color. What I loved most about The Land without Color is that the reader is taken on an adventure that is continuously evolving and changing and I guess it is essentially a character study of the protagonist Alvin. What I also loved about The Land without Color is how the land the reader encounters is vast as well as beautiful (although there is evil within the land too!), and the epic and glorious descriptions courtesy of Ellefson had me in bewilderment which is always a good sign when reading a book!

Benjamin Ellefson is an incredibly talented author who clearly knows how to write unique but engaging stories. It was evident to me from the start that Ellefson is a passionate writer who surely loves entertaining children with his literature and putting a smile on children’s faces. I loved this about the author but what I loved the most about Ellefson’s writing is his remarkable descriptions because they genuinely amazed me. Fantasy novels, in general, are difficult to write because you have to transport the reader quickly and effortlessly, but sadly this is rarely accomplished in a fantasy story but not with The Land without Color. The Land without Color is the way it is because Ellefson knows what he is doing! Ellefson knows how to whisk his readers away to a fantasy land and entice them with magnificent descriptions and keep children entertained from start to finish!

Overall The Land without Color is an excellent book that will captivate readers from beginning to end with its twisty-turny plot and exciting narrative so I, of course, have to award the book five stars!
