The Haunting of Thores-Cross, Karen Perkins

Action & Adventure, Fantasy, Horror & Occult, Literature & Fiction, Mystery & Suspense, Women's Fiction

Emma Moorcroft is still grieving after a late miscarriage and moves to her dream house at Thruscross Reservoir with her husband, Dave. Both Emma and Dave hope that moving into their new home signifies a fresh start, but life is not that simple. Emma has nightmares about the reservoir and the drowned village that lies beneath the water, and is further disturbed by the sound of church bells – from a church that no longer exists.

Jennet is fifteen and lives in the isolated community of Thores-Cross, where life revolves about the sheep on which they depend. Following the sudden loss of both her parents, she is seduced by the local wool merchant, Richard Ramsgill. She becomes pregnant and is shunned not only by Ramsgill, but by the entire village. Lonely and embittered, Jennet’s problems escalate, leading to tragic consequences which continue to have an effect through the centuries.

Emma becomes fixated on Jennet, neglecting herself, her beloved dogs and her husband to the point where her marriage may not survive. As Jennet and Emma’s lives become further entwined, Emma’s obsession deepens and she realises that the curse Jennet inflicted on the Ramsgill family over two hundred years ago is still claiming lives.

Emma is the only one who can stop Jennet killing again, but will her efforts be enough?

The Haunting of Thores-Cross is quite simply one of the most exciting, incredible, occult-inspired books I have ever read. The Haunting of Thores-Cross has astounded me; I enjoyed every single moment of the book because it was by far a perfect read. The wonderful author of the novel, Karen Perkins is a true literary talent because she managed to captivate and enthrall me from the very beginning. To be honest, a part of me was always going to love this book because I love reading books with occult themes in particular but even if I did not enjoy the occult, I would still love this book because it has action and adventure and fantastic writing that will keep the reader happy in bliss!

The Haunting of Thores-Cross is an exceptional novel that will take readers on a journey unlike no other. The reader will be introduced to the protagonist of the book, Emma Moorcroft, a woman who has moved to her dream home at Thruscross Reservoir with her husband after tragic news. Sadly Emma has a miscarriage late in her pregnancy and so her and her husband decide to start a fresh; however, once they arrive at their new home, Emma is haunted by horrific nightmares and she soon realizes that she will not get the fresh start she so desired. What follows is a thrilling story full of shocking moments that you do not want to miss out on so be sure to have a read of The Haunting of Thores-Cross, you will not regret it book lovers!

The story of The Haunting of Thores-Cross is a sensational one because it encompasses everything good about literature. It has an outlandish, brave plot, enthralling characters and an incredibly well thought out backstory that will keep the reader wanting to read for hours on end. The Haunting of Thores-Cross is a unique and special book; it is special for the obvious reasons… that it encompasses everything great about the written word, but it is unique because of the plot. The plot of this novel is something I have never read of or heard of before, it reads like a movie, and you can imagine the details in perfect glory. Never before have I read a book that has a ton of action as well as intellectual depth. In other words, this book has brains behind it; it is not a senseless, quick, action-adventure/horror read.

Karen Perkins, the author does an incredible job of piecing together the present and the past and seamlessly integrates themes into one book of intrigue. Perkins is a phenomenal writer because she is dedicated to her work as well as passionate. Perkins passion shines off the page and into the reader’s mind. Her sometimes lengthy, beautiful descriptions will send the readers mind into visual overdrive, the reader will be able to perfectly imagine every detail the reader comes across and that in my opinion, is the sign of a talented author.

To conclude my thoughts on the brilliant piece of literature that is The Haunting of Thores-Cross, I would say if you are looking for a mystery and suspense novel with occult themes that is unlike anything you have read… a read that will keep you entertained for hours on end as well as enthrall you then this superb book is for you!
