What Would You Do If You Found Yourself In the Middle of An Epic War,
And You Were The Only One Who Knew The Way to Save the Kingdom?

When Otto’s 12th birthday present carries him across a strange sea, he finds himself in an astonishing land, smack dab in the middle of an epic war. A combat between the Kingdom of Color, and the Kingdom of Shapes.

The ravages of war have stripped the land of color and Otto’s only hope of bringing the brilliant hues of light and life back to the land is to defeat the sugar soldiers. Escape from the gnome factory. Outwit the war inspectors. And of course, convince the grasshoppers the vital importance of eating their greens.

In, The Great Sugar War, the second book of the multi-award winning, Land Without Color series, Benjamin Ellefson once again has crafted a whimsical, captivating middle grade fantasy tale full of action and adventure that will whisk readers off to a land beyond their imagination and go deep into their heart for ages.

A few months ago I read and reviewed an incredible book called The Land Without Color, and I can honestly write that the book has turned out to be one of my favorite children/ middle-grade books of the year and a book my children adore. Upon finishing The Land Without Color my children (and even I!) wanted to know what would happen next and so we started to read book two, The Great Sugar War and wow, Benjamin Ellefson the exceptional author has done it once again!

The Great Sugar War is a stunning piece of fantasy fiction that is guaranteed to entertain, enthrall and enchant young readers from the very first page. Everything about this piece of fantasy fiction was exciting; the characters, the incredible literature thanks to the wonderful author, Ellefson and the magnificent things the reader comes across is stellar and will make readers from all genres fall madly in love with this book.

The Great Sugar War is book two in the series so I will try not to spoil the story but also inform you about the premise of book one! Here is an excerpt of my review for The Land Without Color!

“The Land without Color is a highly imaginative story that will introduce its readers to the protagonist of the tale Alvin. Alvin is a young boy who one day on his birthday receives a pack of gum and children love gum! And so he opens the pack and starts to chew, but the gum he has received is no ordinary chewing gum; instead, it is magical because when Alvin blows a bubble with the gum the gum transports him to a magical land called the Kingdom of Color. However, upon arrival Alvin will discover that this Kingdom is not what it used to be; instead, it has lost all of its color and Alvin is the key to bringing the color back. The reader will follow Alvin on his journey across the magical place full of deadly things such as ‘man-eating plants’ ‘two-headed dragon’s’ and even ‘color-stealing goblins.’ What follows is a magical, dangerous but definitely exciting adventure which will see Alvin in his quest to restore color to the Kingdom and this book lovers is the premise of the sensational story.”

Now, how wonderful does The Land Without Color sound?! The reader in The Great Sugar War will introduce the reader to Otto and Otto will too be taken to the Kingdom, and when he arrives he finds himself in the mix of the war raging, and only he can help save the kingdom. The reader will follow Otto as well as many other characters on his journey to save the Kingdom and restore the ‘brilliant hues of light,’ and this book lovers is the premise of the sensational sequel, The Great Sugar War.

The story of The Great Sugar War is excellent and incredibly well-developed thanks to Benjamin Ellefson, the author of the book. Ellefson manages to develop his world with immaculate detail; every event, character, and setting is well thought out and planned, and I was impressed by Ellefson’s flawless ability to do this. As I read The Great Sugar War, I immediately was drawn into the book and felt captivated by Ellefson’s literature, and this is for many reasons. The main reason is is that Ellefson’s literature is detailed in the most immaculate of ways, the text is detailed but not heavy, it is beautifully written so that the reader will be able to immerse themselves in the story from beginning to end without difficulty.

Not only is Ellefson a talented author for his descriptive powers but he is also a phenomenal writer thanks to his characterization of the protagonist of the novel, Otto. Otto is a character every reader will be able to root for, his grit and determination to not give up and to fight to rescue the Kingdom is inspiring. Ellefson has essentially written a character study of Otto, and I adore this approach in literature because it makes the story even more immersive and entertaining for a reader. Being able to accompany Otto on his journey was incredible, it was wonderful to witness his awakening and discovery of new things he did not know about before, it made for an incredibly entertaining read.

As The Great Sugar War is an exciting, compelling and action-packed fantasy adventure that will entertain and delight young readers for hours on end I, of course, have to review this incredible book five stars!
