The Five Wishes of Mr. Murray McBride, Joe Siple

Coming of Age, Contemporary Fiction, Family Saga, Literature & Fiction

With all his family and friends gone, one-hundred-year-old Murray McBride is looking for a reason to live. He finds it in Jason Cashman, a ten-year-old boy with a terminal heart defect and a list of five things he wants to do before he dies. Together, they race against the limited time each has left, ticking off wishes one by one. Along the way, Murray remembers what it’s like to be young, and Jason fights for the opportunity to grow old. But when tragedy strikes, their worlds are turned upside-down, and an unexpected gift is the only thing that can make Jason’s final wish come true.

The Five Wishes of Mr. Murray McBride is a poignant, memorable and stellar novel written by the superb author Joe Siple who from beginning to end charmed me with his sensational literature and incredible story. The Five Wishes of Mr. Murray McBride is the perfect coming of age/contemporary fiction novel thanks to the themes it explores and for me, it is one of my favorite coming of age stories thanks to the unique but moving premise of the story. I have to admit that when I read the description of The Five Wishes of Mr. Murray McBride I was instantly hooked, how often is it book lovers that a reader comes a book like a story featured in this one? Rarely and that is why when I discovered it I knew I had to read it as well as share it with all of you lovely readers. When I started to read The Five Wishes of Mr. Murray McBride I was instantly impressed with the high quality of writing courtesy of Siple as well as the charming but heartbreaking story. If you choose to read this book, you will be taken on an emotional roller coaster, in which you will many different things. However, do not let this scare you because it is one of the best books I have read from the genre and should not be missed by any reader.

The Five Wishes of Mr. Murray McBride will introduce the reader to two important characters with one of them being Murray McBride and the other Jason Cashman. Murray is one hundred years old but he has outlived all of his friends and family… he is alone and he is struggling to find a reason to live. Jason, on the other hand, is young, ten years old to be exact and he has a heart defect which means he will die soon. Murray has a list of five things he wishes to do before he dies and with the help of Jason, they will begin to fulfill these wishes. What follows is a moving, emotional, memorable and incredible novel that will take readers on a journey unlike any experienced before.

The story of The Five Wishes of Mr. Murray McBride is a profoundly moving one which features a host of profound and upsetting themes. I admit that when I read the description of the book I worried the book would be too hard-hitting to read however I am pleasantly surprised that it was not. Sure, the book does deal with some upsetting themes, especially with regards to the ten-year-old boy who is dying slowly by the day, but the book is also full of a wealth of heart and happiness and will make readers smile from ear to ear. In short, the book is a book of dominant themes and all of these profound themes are weaved together entirely by the incredible author Joe Siple who I admit, am obsessed with now.

Joe Siple is an incredible author who has managed to transfix and entertain me with his beautiful literature. I am impressed by the amount of depth Siple has managed to lace throughout his book. Siple ensures throughout his book that his readers are entertained and compelled from beginning to end, and Siple does this by weaving twists and turns throughout his book which yes, are incredibly upsetting but also entertaining at times! As well as this Siple flawlessly weaves brilliant characterization and development of his characters and that, in turn, will keep the readers turning the pages from beginning to end.

Siple is an exceptional author for many reasons, but one of the primary attributes I love about his writing is the characterization of the characters the reader comes across in the book; specifically Murray. Murray is a man who thinks that his life is over but when he realizes it is not, it is wonderful. Seeing him transform and grow as a character throughout the book was a pleasant experience and made me smile from start to finish.

Overall The Five Wishes of Mr. Murray McBride is an extraordinary piece of contemporary fiction that will entertain and move readers from beginning to end so I, of course, have to award the book five stars! It would be criminal not to. So please book lovers, have a read of the excellent book and get lost in an engrossing, captivating story… you will not regret it!
