The Fairies of Turtle Creek, Jill Sayre

Children & Picture Book, Fantasy, Magic & Sword and Sorcery, Middle Grade, Myth's & Legends, Teen & Young Adult

Claire Collins is a smart eighth grader. Science is her favorite subject, after all, it can explain everything, right? But then her grandmother arrives, saying that fairies are REAL! Nothing is more real than the danger Claire’s brother is facing in the Iraq War. So having a crazy grandmother in the house is the last thing Claire needs. But with the strange things that have begun happening lately, Claire wonders, could fairies actually exist?

The Fairies of Turtle Creek is an exceptional book written by the well accomplished and talented author Jill Sayre. The Fairies of Turtle Creek is a book I was keen to read ever since discovering it because I always love to find adorable, heart-warming and inspiring adventure/fantasy stories for my children to read so when I discovered The Fairies of Turtle Creek I thought ‘is this finally the perfect book?!’. Now that I have finished The Fairies of Turtle Creek I can happily write that yes it is book lovers. The Fairies of Turtle Creek is one of the most well written and well-developed stories I have ever come across, and I genuinely mean this. It is the sad truth that many children/young adult books are not written to a high standard, and I understand why some authors may write their children’s book this way because after all, children mostly want a fast-paced story, however, this is not always the best option. The child will most likely enjoy the story however they won’t remember it. Personally, as a mother I look for children books which my children will remember and want to re-read, and The Fairies of Turtle Creek is that book as The Fairies of Turtle Creek is an expertly written children’s book with a story that is well developed and memorable and a story that I guarantee children with love thanks to its fast-paced but engaging narrative and the sensational story that unfolds.

The Fairies of Turtle Creek will introduce the reader to the young protagonist of the novel, Claire Collins, an exceptionally talented and smart eight grader whose passion in life is science and logic. Claire believes in facts and science, so when her grandmother arrives and tells her that fairies are real she thinks she is crazy! I mean, can fairies really exist? Claire does not think so but when strange occurrences happen, Claire begins to wonder that there may be some truth to what her grandmother is saying and this leads her on a memorable and unforgettable journey.

The story of The Fairies of Turtle Creek is a thrilling one thanks to the enthralling and action-packed moments as well as the unpredictable nature of the book that will have the readers turning the pages with haste from beginning to end. I love children books that involve a journey because usually in these stories the character develops and grows as they overcome events which in turn adds to the development of the character and explores life lessons throughout the book and that is most certainly the case with The Fairies of Turtle Creek. What I loved most about The Fairies of Turtle Creek is that the reader is taken on an adventure that is continuously evolving and changing.

Jill Sayre is an incredible writer who knows how to capture young readers attention from the start. Sayre does this by placing the reader in the thick of the drama straight away with no long build up. The reader will be thrust into the story and because the reader experiences this so fast they will be hooked and captivated to read until the very end. Sayre manages to ensure that her readers are entertained from beginning to end, and she does this by weaving twists and turns throughout her book as well as many jaw-dropping moments that will fascinate as well as excite young readers.

Jill Sayre is an incredibly talented author who clearly knows how to write unique but engaging stories. It was evident to me from the start that Sayre is a passionate writer who surely loves entertaining children with her literature and putting a smile on children’s faces. I loved this about the author but what I loved the most about Sayre’s writing is her remarkable descriptions because they genuinely amazed me. Fantasy novels, in general, are difficult to write because you have to transport the reader quickly and effortlessly, but sadly this is rarely accomplished in a fantasy story but not with The Fairies of Turtle Creek. The Fairies of Turtle Creek is the way it is because Sayre knows what she is doing! Sayre knows how to whisk her readers away to a fantasy land and entice them with magnificent descriptions and keep children entertained from start to finish!

Overall The Fairies of Turtle Creek is a marvelous, stellar and supreme children’s book that will entertain, delight as well as charm young readers and so I, of course, have to award this book five stars! Thank you so much for the kind review! I wanted this book to be a piece of art, so not only does it tell the story I created, but I illustrated it as well. Many of the places in my book exist today— I love visiting them when I take walks. So if you’re ever in Dallas, you may use the map illustration in the front of the book to guide you. Maybe you’ll find a fairy along the way! 🧚🏻‍♀️
