What kind of man loves…for centuries?

An ancient murder. Forbidden love. An unimaginable solution.
Thousands of years ago an ancient race discovered this planet and settled in, dividing the territories and manipulating the human populations. They were extremely long-lived. In fact, they believed they were immortal. Then an unexpected murder occurred, and in a rush for self-protection, something new was created: men who looked human but weren’t. They were shapeshifters, lethal and effective, with human emotions and immortal capabilities.
They were called warriors, and the most powerful were the enforcers.
The human populations thought them creatures of myth, and like most myths there was a tragic element. Some warriors fell in love with human girls and they became more human. They questioned, thought about right and wrong, began to challenge the six ruling immortals known as the Calata.
Conflict erupted, as conflict usually does between competing powers, and as part of an
Agreement to prevent war these immortal warriors asked for their human lovers to be made immortal. Since the magic was beyond the abilities of the alchemists, reincarnation was offered as a solution. The natural process could be manipulated. Ancient magic would allow the lovers to reunite in each recurring human lifetime-now known in human populations as “past lives.”
It hasn’t worked out as expected.
Galaxy North is beautiful, successful, and she has what a lot of people want: freedom, with no socks to pick up. She lives in a small town on the Oregon coast, and if her life is lonely, she likes it that way. She thinks of herself as normal, other than the pre-cognition, an ability to read the auras left in the landscape from trauma or deep passion. When the dreams begin, Lexi realizes her life isn’t her own, that she might have experienced several lifetimes, caught in a trap of loving the same immortal man.
Christan is immortal. An enforcer, possessing such consummate power even the mention of his name evokes respect and fear. His world was violent, empty, until he bonded to a mortal woman to save her life. Christan has loved her-and lost her-for centuries. Exiled for over 400 years, he’s called back into a world he left behind because an ancient enemy wants to destroy her.
But Christan doesn’t want to be here. He definitely doesn’t want to see Lexi, because he remembers every sin, every moment of heat and passion they shared-in that first life, and in the lifetimes after. Eventually, Christan must face what he can’t control. And Lexi must remember the past or risk losing the future with the man who has held her heart for centuries.

The Darkness in Dreams: A Calata Novel is book one in the Enforcer’s Legacy series written by Sue Wilder and wow, what a stellar first book! Paranormal romances are some of my favorite books to read because they are the perfect form of escape. With every paranormal book I have read I have always found myself thrilled, entertained and enchanted and as I read The Darkness in Dreams, I found myself feeling the same emotions all thanks to the author and her phenomenal writing ability. From the start of The Darkness in Dreams the reader is going to instantly be captivated, it would be impossible for a reader not to because the author from the beginning develops her plot outstandingly as well as her characters. As I started to read The Darkness in Dreams, I found myself instantly charmed as well as invested and I felt this until the last page, and this is all thanks to Wilder’s incredible characterization and how entertaining her novel is! At this point in my review I already have to recommend this gem of a book for you lovely readers to read but if you need more convincing then continue to read to learn more about The Darkness in Dreams!

The Darkness in Dreams is a paranormal romance/action adventure novel that will take readers on a breath-taking and emotive journey full of many highs and lows. The reader in The Darkness in Dreams will be given great insight into the story as Wilder from the start informs her reader of the premise and builds her world fantastically. At the heart of the story is an ancient race who thousands of years ago discovered Earth and decided to settle and when they did they essentially conquered and divided the human population of Earth. The alien race is immortal, well, they thought they were but one day a murder occurs and this murder changes the course of history because from this unexpected murder a new breed was created, a race that looked like humans but wasn’t, they were shapeshifters, and these shapeshifters are far more advanced and have a mix of immortality and real human emotions which benefit them in many ways. The shapeshifters were known either as enforcers or warriors and some of them would find themselves falling in love with humans and this, in turn, made them more human.

I do not want to spoil much of the book but what happens next is an agreement is made and this agreement is pivitoal to the story because the warriors requested that their ‘human lovers’ be made immortal too, in order to keep the peace and prevent war and so there gift was granted but not in the way you may think . Instead what happened is that the warriors/enforcers would reunite with their lovers every lifetime and although that may sound confusing, think of it as past lives and then it becomes easier to understand, and this is the general premise of the story but so much more happens book lovers!

At this point in the novel the reader will be introduced to Lexi, a beautiful, intelligent and successful woman who has a lot going for her, however, although many wishes to be her she is, in fact, lonely and keeps to herself in the small town she lives in along the beautiful Oregon coast. Lexi is a central character to the story, and the reader will soon start to learn about certain dreams she has been having, and the dreams she is having is of Christian, an immortal enforcer who has loved her in a past life. Christian is the male protagonist of the story, and he is bound to Liz and always has to protect her, and soon he is called back to Earth to save Liz from an enemy she can’t defeat and this book lovers is the premise of the exciting The Darkness in Dreams.

The Darkness in Dreams is a thrilling novel with a fast-paced narrative that is laced with romance, fantasy, and even mystery. As I read The Darkness in Dreams, I found myself captivated from the very start and this is thanks to the unique but fascinating premise of the book. I have read a lot of fantasy in my time but never have I ever read a fantasy book like The Darkness in Dreams and never have I been so entertained before and that is all thanks to Sue Wilder, the exceptional author we have to thank for this engaging story. The plot of The Darkness in Dreams is a thrilling one, and I am incredibly impressed by how well Sue Wilder has developed it. Usually, it will take an author a long time for developing the story but Wilder, however, is a pro and she developed her story quick and never once was the greatness of the story sacrificed for a rapid world building. Instead, the plot although fast is well-developed that the reader will be able to immerse themselves in the tale incredibly quickly and that is one of the many qualities I adore about Wilder’s literature.

As I read The Darkness in Dreams, I found myself utterly captivated, and this is thanks to the author Sue Wilder and her incredible talent for building tension as well as the atmosphere with her literature. As I read this book I always felt on edge in two very different ways. I would feel on edge with excitement as well as fear and that is all thanks to the wonderful plot devices Wilder manages to weave throughout her plot – plot devices such as twists and turns for the fear elements as well as descriptive language and narrative for the exciting ones. Sue Wilder is an author whose work has floored me and this is thanks to her originality and her descriptive powers. The explanatory powers courtesy of Wilder is incredible and made me feel as if I was there, at the moment, experiencing the harsh but incredible moments the reader encounters throughout The Darkness in Dreams.

Overall Sue Wilder has written a phenomenal and engrossing book and so I have no choice but to award this stunning piece of fiction an excellent five stars! So if you are a reader who is looking to read something completely different to what is out there then read this book and get lost in a fantastic world!

Hi Aimee~ Thank you! This is a wonderful review and I’m glad you enjoyed The Darkness in Dreams. I had a lot of fun writing this book and the next two books that tell Christan and Lexi’s story. Right now I’m working on Arsen’s story with Katerina. It’s summer, so I write in the evenings outside-I have a lovely pergola and I put fairy lights up this spring after writing about the fairy lights in the trees at the villa of the butterflies… you can see a photo of my pergola on my website (because I think it’s fantastic at… Read more »
