The Avant Garde of Western Civ, David Holdridge

NonFiction

After being hauled out of a Vietnamese rice paddy in 1969 and then spending months in various neuropsychiatric wards in the United States, David Holdridge evolved to become a stalwart in the promotion of the American narrative overseas. As such, the author witnessed that “business” grow from a rather lonely pursuit to the global industry it is today – most commonly known in the West as “Overseas Relief and Development.” THE AVANT GARDE OF WESTERN CIV is the story of one “foot soldier” and his family as they sought to provide salve and transformation within the aftermath of the Iraq invasion in 2003. This memoir explores how difficult and often complicit “giving” can be.

The Avant-Garde of Western Civ is an incredible book that will take its readers on a moving and memorable journey that readers will struggle to forget. The author’s story of his journey is incredible, and unlike anything, I have read before. I have read a lot of books of this nature as it is a genre I adore however The Avant-Garde of Western Civ stands out amongst the genre and is now one of my favorite books of all time thanks to the story and compelling literature. Never before have I been so enchanted by a book but the author and narrator of his own story, David Holdridge managed to compel me from the very start thanks to his honest and captivating writing. If you are a reader who adores memoirs and history books then The Avant-Garde of Western Civ is for you as it is one of the best I have ever had the pleasure of reading.

The Avant-Garde of Western Civ is an incredible but emotional book that will take readers on a memorable but hard-hitting journey. The reader will be introduced to the David Holdridge, who is also the author and the reader will follow him on his journey in Iraq for seven years and through many pivotal changes in America and overseas. The book is about David’s journey as well as ‘Overseas Relief and Development’ and it highlights the work that was done within the aftermath of the Iraq invasion as well as so much more. All of this and more is explored in The Avant-Garde of Western Civ, and the wonderful author perfectly narrates everything so that the reader is included as well as entertained from beginning to end.

David Holdridge is an incredible man who I admire so much, there is much I admire about David, but one of the core attributes I admire about him is the fact that he has told his story. Literature is an art form, and it is there for stories to be told and shared, and stories like David’s should definitely be shared thanks to the inspiring nature of it. David experienced much and experienced great hardship while serving and with his grit and determination, decided that he would never give up and he didn’t, and this is incredibly inspiring to me. David flawlessly narrates his story in a brazen, honest and inspiring way, the journey is tough at times, especially when the reader reads of David’s hardships but mostly the story is inspiring because it shows us, readers, that anything can happen as long as you have the will and determination.

The profoundness in The Avant-Garde of Western Civ is sensational, and many readers will feel a host of different emotions while reading this book. David effortlessly inspires thoughts and feelings in his readers as well as compel them to read from beginning to end. I found myself reading The Avant-Garde of Western Civ at an alarming rate because it was captivating as well as engrossing; his incredible literature will have you turning the pages frantically, and I adored how he was able to do this. As well as David writing his novel in an incredibly compelling way, he also is excellent at describing the settings and places in this book which will make the reader feel as if you are right there, this is how I felt, and because I did, I felt as if I was with David on his journey and it made for incredibly poignant reading.
