RED HEADED BOOK LOVER

Stealing Fire, Susan Sloate

Historical Fiction, Historical Romance, Literature & Fiction, Romance

In glittery 1980’s Los Angeles, once-famous Broadway lyricist Beau Kellogg is disillusioned, unhappily married and yearning for one last musical hit, while he writes advertising jingles for quick money. Meanwhile, idealistic young singer, Amanda Harary, works a demanding day job at a charming New York hotel.

They weren’t looking for each other… but what they find together is a once-in-a-lifetime understanding, impossible joy and piercing heartache… until they learn that some connections, however improbable, are meant to last forever.

STEALING FIRE is a story for romantics everywhere, who believe in the transformative power of love.

Stealing Fire is a novel I was destined to love ever since discovering it. There is nothing I love more than romance, the American dream and music so to find a book that combines all three of these themes ensured that I was captive to the unfolding story and ensured that I would love the book from start to finish. When I started to read Stealing Fire, I was instantly swept off my feet thanks to the incredible author’s mesmerizing literature that was laced with a passion which in turn kept me turning the pages with haste.

Stealing Fire is a story that takes place in 1980’s Los Angeles (and partly New York), and if you are a reader who loves reading about different decades, you will love Stealing Fire. This is because the author’s hypnotic descriptions of this decade will not only charm you but also educate you thanks to her wealth of knowledge on the music scene but also attitudes during this decade. Stealing Fire is technically not an historical fiction novel because historical fiction novels are usually only classed this when they are set many decades ago but I personally would describe it as historical fiction because the male protagonist featured in the story is a sixty-year-old man and his life is explored in great detail, both past and present which in turn gives the reader a glimpse not only into the year 1980 but also many years before and that is one quality I love about Stealing Fire! Before I discuss my thoughts on the book even further, I think it is only fair to first explain more about the plot so you readers can catch up on what this darling book is about.

Stealing Fire as you know is set in the 1980’s and will introduce the reader to the male protagonist of the story, Beau Kellogg. Beau (what a perfect name!) is a sixty-something-year-old ‘once-famous Broadway lyricist) and his life is unfulfilled, miserable and it is safe for me to write that he is not happy and especially not happy in his marriage as well as career. Beau was a star on the Broadway scene but over the years the work dried up, and he could never keep up with his high level of success thanks to his last hit musical. This has left Beau unfulfilled in his life and left him yearning for more… will he ever be fulfilled?

The reader of Stealing Fire will also be introduced to the female protagonist Amanda Harary, a young woman working in New York who dreams of finding fame on Broadway. One evening she happens to start talking to Beau, and although their relationship at first is purely friendship, it soon develops further, and the two both start a relationship. You may be thinking, ‘wait, isn’t he too old for her’ and sure, he is older but that does not mean that love does not exist, there is such a thing as somebody being an old soul and so the two really do hit it off and help each other in many ways. I will delve into their relationship more throughout my review but do not give up considering the book features an age gap relationship because it actually makes for enchanting reading!

Stealing Fire is a classic, heart-warming romance with a twist that has captured my heart and ran off with it. Because an affair is present in Stealing Fire thanks to Beau being married, it may evoke strong emotions in a reader but do not let the fact of this turn you away because what is literature meant to do? It is intended to evoke emotions and feelings within its readers and the fact that the exceptional author Susan Sloate has managed to accomplish this shows us that her literature is brilliant and she has done an excellent job!

I loved many attributes about Sloate’s literature; however, I admit that what I enjoyed the most was her ability to write such a convincing romance between Beau and Amanda. The romance and the chemistry between the two were thrilling to read, and their dynamic personalities lit up the pages throughout Stealing Fire and had me charmed, shocked and left wanting more from start to finish. If you are a reader who loves to read a romance; the kind that takes you on an emotional roller coaster, one that will evoke many feelings in you and will challenge your perceptions of love then Stealing Fire is definitely for you. This is because Stealing Fire is not your traditional romance, it is instead a unique but stellar one that will provoke you in so many ways and those kind of novels, in my opinion, are the best.

What I also adored about Stealing Fire was the author’s attention to her characters and her story. What I mean by this is that Sloate took her time with her characters and her story, being careful to develop them at the perfect pace. I hate reading a novel that rushes the development of either the story or characters, so the fact that Sloate was so careful to take her time and develop the story and characters organically show us that she really does appreciate not only literature but the reader’s experience, and that to me is beautiful.

If you are a reader who loves romance and is looking for more then Stealing Fire is a book for you and one you should not miss! That is why I am going to of course be awarding Stealing Fire five stars and why I implore that all readers, even male readers! Have a read of Stealing Fire because its combination of romance, passion, history, and music will charm and delight you from start to finish and I would never want a reader to miss out on such an enjoyable read!
