The Square Mile Murder, J.J. Ward

Detective & Private Investigator, Espionage & Conspiracy, Literature & Fiction, Mystery & Suspense, Politics

After a chance skirmish with an armed killer in central London, agent John Mordred ends up in hospital, condition critical.

Six weeks and a full recovery later, he’s persuaded it’s purely a police matter, so one he should forget about.

But nothing in MI7 is ever that simple. There’s more to this particular incident than meets the eye and unnamed people in high places want it investigating. They believe Mordred’s the man for the job.

Add to the mix five missing IMF officials, the kidnapping of a top British financier in Venezuela, evidence of a related cover-up in Whitehall, a young and unpredictable London Lord Mayor with acute delusions of grandeur, plus – most bizarrely – persistent rumours of local UFO sightings, and things threaten to spin radically out of control.

Suddenly Mordred’s life is on the line again. This time, alongside those of innumerable others.

And it’s him versus the clock.

The Square Mile Murder is a novel that has astounded me with its addictive nature and exciting, fast-paced plot that compelled me to read from beginning to end. Never before have I read an espionage book that is full of so much depth and so much backstory. It is no surprise that The Square Mile Murder has a significant amount of depth and talent, as this is book eight in J.J. Ward’s ‘John Mordred Series.’ I confess I have not read any of the other books as of yet, but I found myself immediately gripped with this one and the character of agent John Mordred. If you are a reader who loves to be taken on a thrilling ride while conspiracies and murders are rife then you will love The Square Mile Murder; I know I did!

The Square Mile Murder is an incredible novel that follows the protagonist of the story, agent John Mordred as he once again faces a new and unsettling case. The Square Mile Murder is a unique espionage thriller as it encompasses many themes such as conspiracies, murder, crime, ‘ufo’s’ and corruption. J.J. Ward perfectly blends and weaves all of these topics together to make one brilliant, exceptional novel. The story is set in the bustling City of London, and the reader soon witnesses a horrific murder in which a body is discovered which has been doused in acid and a suspicious looking hard drive that is on the victim. Mordred is close by, but he was also apart of the attack and has been found with stab wounds but has thankfully, he still survived. What happens next is a fast-paced chase to stop a sinister plot that could spell disaster. The reader will follow Mordred on his journey and investigation as well as the Mayor of London and his suspicious dealings. The Square Mile Murder is indeed a gripping story that will most certainly captivate you from the beginning, and this is thanks to the exceptional author of this novel, J.J. Ward.

J.J. Ward is an incredibly talented author, this is not only evident in this book of his but also his previous seven books in the John Mordred series as well as a few more books. I have not read all of his books, but I have read the previews of each and found that Ward is a talented, versatile writer who can perfect and master any genre. The Square Mile Murder, his latest piece of fiction is astounding; the fast-paced nature of his book had me turning the pages with haste, desperate to find out the answers to the questions stirring in my mind. The nature of The Square Mile Murder is one that holds a twisty-turny plot which is unpredictable and shocking. Never once could I find myself accurately guessing the plot, whenever I thought I had the plot sussed Ward managed to take a turn and shock me. This is one of the many reasons why Ward is such a talent, another reason why he is a true wordsmith is that his writing is phenomenal. His words are addictive and read flawlessly, never once did I struggle with the text of The Square Mile Murder as it flowed beautifully throughout which made this book a delight to read.

As I am a huge lover of this book and love how the author, J.J. Ward managed to entertain, thrill, terrify and compel me in a matter of a few chapters, I have no choice but to award this thrilling piece of literature a dazzling Five Stars! Thank you so much for you kind review, Aimee Ann. I’m bowled over by your words. I was motivated to write the book partly by some reading I did about the global financial system and how fragile it is, while i was on a week-long school trip in June 2017. A lot of my novels come about through reading about the deeper forces behind current affairs, and this was no exception. The book is available only on Amazon now – I stopped offering it on Kobo and Apple just after it was published. However, if anyone wants it as a… Read more »
