Action & Adventure, Detective & Private Investigator, Literature & Fiction, Mystery & Suspense, Thriller & Psychological Thriller

Charlene Butler, a.k.a. Charlie, is beautiful, independent, and a successful pub owner in downtown Montreal, but prefers not to discuss her past, or the main reason for her success. When she anonymously receives strange letters and the police don’t show an interest in the case, she is convinced by Frank, her best friend, to hire a private investigator to help her solve the mystery. However, PI Simm seems to have a few secrets of his own.

Charlie and Simm join forces when the harassment escalates from letters to explicit threats. Their investigation leads them from the safety of her home, through Montreal’s underworld, to organized crime in Dublin, Ireland. What they discover contradicts Charlie’s most fundamental beliefs in herself and ultimately makes her doubt her own character.

Sins of the Father by A.J. McCarthy goes beyond a great detective mystery novel and is so much more than just a novel as it is an excellent reading experience that will hook readers for hours on end. Sins of the Father is a thrilling who-done-it mystery filled with shocking twists and turns that left me utterly breathless from the start! As I read Sins of the Father I found myself completely immersed in the mystery from the very beginning thanks to the exceptional plot development courtesy of the author A.J. McCarthy who will keep you guessing until the very end.

Charlene Butler, Charlie for short, is a reclusive pub owner in downtown Montreal. Charlie is successful, self-reliant, and very private especially regarding her past and reasons behind all her success. Charlene begins receiving strange and increasingly menacing anonymous letters. At first she thinks nothing of them and the police show little interest, but at the persistence of her best friend and employee Frank, Charlie hires private investigator Simm to help uncover the mystery behind these chilling letters. When the letters ascend from unsettling to outright sinister Charlie must trust Simm and reveal her secrets. Charlie and Simm follow a hazardous path through Montreal’s underworld to the belly of Dublin, Ireland’s organized crime. Unburying her past will make Charlie question every conviction she had in herself, weaving a web of self-doubt.

Sins of the Father by A.J. McCarthy is an engaging detective mystery from start to finish that thrilled as well as shocked me. The exceptional author A.J. McCarthy spins together an intricate web filled with mystery, organized crime, and a wonder, if some things should stay buried in the past and reading this all unravel, was riveting. I love how genuine and likable the characters are, each with their own unique and distinguishable personalities and I felt invested in them even if I did not particularly like them. Once I started on the path with Charlie and Simm I couldn’t help but hang on tightly through each twist and turn to an unforeseeable ending and that shows us what a talented author A.J. McCarthy is.

Thank you, Aimee Ann, for the wonderful review! I’m so happy you enjoyed my novel. It’s always appreciated when someone gives an author such positive feedback, and in such detail. As you mentioned, Sins of the Fathers is set in Montreal. I discovered that it’s a great place to set a novel, and I may use it again in future stories, having visited there so many times . My next novel, which will be released in January 2019 is set in my hometown of Quebec City, another interesting site, full of possibilities for intrigue. If any of your readers are… Read more »
