Sierra Kay, Author Spotlight

Author Spotlight

Hello book lovers! Today is a day where I will be writing another author spotlight for a well-accomplished author whose work I have loved. As you know book lovers I love learning about authors and the inspiration behind their work, it fascinates me and adds to the depth of the book because the reader will be able to better understand it. That is how the author spotlights were created because I soon discovered that you lovely readers ALSO love learning about author’s, so I am excited to tell you a little bit more about author Sierra Kay whose book In The Midst of Fire entertained and thrilled me from beginning to end. I personally would recommend this book to all of those that love following a character on a compelling journey but really the book can be read by anybody as it is flawlessly written and highly enjoyable. With today’s author spotlight for Sierra, a biography of the author and an interview between me and Sierra will be shared, and I hope that you book lovers enjoy reading it! To kick this off here is an author bio about the wonderful Sierra Kay.

Award-winning author Sierra Kay’s love of the written word was predestined. Her mother concerned with the state of the public education system encouraged her to read anything that she could get her hands on, including the spelling bee word list that appeared in the Chicago Tribune each year.

She read literary treasures like Anne of the Green Gables and Tale of Two Cities. However, she snuck in romance novels that she hid between her mattresses. Those weren’t on her mother’s list of approved reading material. However, her favorite book growing up was Aesop’s Fables, which she feels puts her in an excellent position to share the morals of her personal stories, whether people are interested or not.

Kay has an M.A. in Writing from DePaul University, won a Nuyorican Poets Cafe Short Story Slam, participated in comedy fests as a member of the writing teams for Spankx and N20 Comedy, and writes suspense novels. Her novel, In the Midst of Fire, was the 2017 Book Excellence Award finalist for suspense.  You can purchase her novels on and  Visit for more information.

Now, how wonderful does Sierra sound?! Sierra is a truly exceptional writer and I hope that you lovely readers have a read of her work because you will not regret it! Please see below an interview between me and Sierra, I hope that you enjoy Sierra’s answers to my questions, they are incredible and provide some great advice too!

Thank you for joining us today Sierra at Red Headed Book Lover Blog! In your own words could you please tell us about your book and what inspired you to write your book.

In the Midst of Fire is a contemporary retelling of Hansel and Gretel.  I’ve always been interested in the dark side of fairy tales, including what drives people to make the choices they do. So the concept of twins protecting each other is definitely Hansel and Gretel. But, in addition, there is an evil stepmother. So In the Midst of Fire was prepared for layers of complexity. It made it fun to write.

What would your advice be for aspiring writers?

My advice is to write. Write whatever comes to mind, and always take advantage of opportunities.  A friend was getting a sketch comedy group together.  I asked to be a fly on the wall to learn.  Next thing I know, I’m writing sketches and having a ball. Sketch writing has allowed me to remove barriers and follow where the story takes me.  I hope that freedom has translated into stronger storylines for my readers.  So my advice is take advantage of every opportunity to write and learn.

In your opinion, what is the most important thing about a book?

For me, the characters always come first.  Who are they? What are their motivations? How would they act? How would they react? Whether I am reading or writing, I need strong characters.  If I don’t care about the characters, sometimes I don’t finish a book.

Lastly, when can we readers expect to read more wonderful books from you?

I have written a novel called At the Touch of Love, which is more of a romantic suspense. That is very loosely based on a very of Sleeping Beauty. You have to read it yourself to find out how.  In that novel, I wanted to look at love from the aspect of a well-established love, a budding love and also the love between friends.  However, I had to sprinkle a bit of treachery and evil throughout or it wouldn’t be a Sierra Kay novel.

Its official book lovers, I am obsessed with Sierra! If you have liked what you have read about Sierra and are interested in learning more about Sierra and reading her work, then please do have a browse of the links below and be sure to have a read of the previews too! You will not regret it.
