Emily has accepted the truth of her past trauma and made peace with her battered egos. She’s won the first battle, but the fight for recovery still rages. Determined to protect her younger siblings from her abuser, Emily gathers the strength to speak her secret, only to discover that the people she trusted are powerless to intervene. Nancy insists the key to resolving Emily’s crisis lies in the First Realm. Desperate for help, Emily again crosses the barrier between Realms in search of a Champion…the one person with enough power to end the destructive cycle of abuse and transform Emily from victim to survivor. Can she complete her journey and return to the Second Realm to save her family, or will her worst fear turn out to be true: that she is her own worst enemy?

Wow, Jane Alvey Harris, you have done it again! Secret Keeper is book two in the My Myth Trilogy book lovers, and a short while ago I read and reviewed the first book called Riven. Riven was a thrilling novel that managed to shock, charm and entertain me all at once and this is thanks to the many poignant and exciting themes explored as well as the author’s incredible literature that transfixed me from start to finish. Upon finishing reading Riven I was desperate to read Secret Keeper, and now that I have finished it I can happily write that Harris has done it again! Harris has once again managed to enthrall, captivate and blow me away. Ever since completing Secret Keeper I have been thinking of its intricate and detailed story and how I need to re-read it! That is when you know book lovers that you have come across an incredible book when you are thinking of it when you have a million things to do. That is why I am already going to recommend Secret Keeper as well as Riven to you lovely readers, and yes, it may be early on in my review, but Secret Keeper is a novel not to be missed so please do take my advice, you will not regret it!

Riven, the first book in the My Myth Trilogy introduced the reader to the protagonist and star of the series, Emily. Emily is seventeen years old, and she has experienced a great deal in her life even though she is young. The abuse she has endured and suffered has made Emily escape into a fantasy realm she has created to escape the abuse she suffered and the emotions she feels when her abuser is to be released from prison, and this is the premise of the first novel, Riven.

Secret Keeper is a continuation of Emily’s journey to recovery, she has made incredible strides, but Emily is still full of anger and upset because of what happened to her. Emily in Secret Keeper will struggle with these emotions especially when she worries for the safety of her younger siblings, she is terrified the abuser will abuse them too, and this starts the process of Emily once again escaping into her fantasy realm. Emily will cross over into the realm she has created once again in the ‘search of a Champion.’ The Champion is the only person that holds enough power to ‘end the destructive cycle of abuse and transform Emily from victim to survivor’ and this book lovers is the premise of Secret Keeper.

The story of Secret Keeper for me was thrilling, captivating and addictive right from the start and I felt this from beginning to end. Secret Keeper was captivating to me from the start thanks to the unique premise of the story and the bewitching literature courtesy of the author, Jane Alvey Harris who hooked me with her unique tale once again that was unlike anything I have read before. It is rare to find a poignant novel that deals with themes of PTSD that has laces of fantasy, so this series is an incredibly refreshing one, and I am impressed how it has no gimmicks within it! Many fantasy novels that deal with poignant themes feel false and have ludicrous sequences in them, but Secret Keeper never once has this. Everything that happens between the pages of Secret Keeper is poignant, expertly written, flawless, honest and accurate and so if you want to get lost in a world unlike anything you have read before then Secret Keeper is definitely for you!

Jane Alvey Harris is an incredible writer whose writing is powerful, descriptive and sophisticated and she knows how to grasp her reader’s attention from the first page. Harris instead of writing a long, drawn-out build up which is commonly found in fantasy novels, decides to ditch this approach and thrust her reader into the heart of the story straight away so that the reader is instantly captivated and immersed. I personally love this approach, what is the point of having a long build-up with little excitement? This is only necessary if the author in question can’t develop the characters in the story quickly but with Harris, the reader will not encounter this issue because Harris instantly develops her characters and makes the reader invest in not only them but also their journey.

Overall Secret Keeper is a thrilling, compelling and thought-provoking novel that will easily entertain readers for many days and nights and so, I, of course, have to award this stellar gem of a book five stars!
