The REP, Terrence Damon Spencer

Literature & Fiction, Murder & Crime, Mystery & Suspense, Thriller & Psychological Thriller

We have all felt it at one time or another, the anger towards a rude customer who aggressively demands the attention of a customer service representative, using foul language, name calling and threats to get what they want. Our understanding, compassion or fear of the consequences keeps us from pursuing a more aggressive method of satisfying the situation, while maintaining a false concern for their needs, despite their verbal assault.

Tommy Thorpe, a collections agent in a Milwaukee, Wisconsin call center, finds his sanity slipping quickly with every abusive call. Combined with the pressures from his supervisor, and abrupt change in his financial status, he allows a darker side of himself to surface, committing the ultimate crime to release his stress and problems. Soon, any information obtained from a customer, will be used for an entirely different purpose.

Genius, shocking and unique are three words I would use to describe The REP. The REP is written by the talented Terrence Damon Spencer, and I have to admit, his book is incredible! The REP is a unique book which is unlike anything I have read before, it’s incredibly unique story which combines themes of murder, crime and ‘revenge’ entertained and captivated me from the first page.

The REP follows a man called Tommy Thorpe who is the twisted protagonist of the novel. The author expertly describes in the description of The REP that nearly everybody has experienced the hateful, annoyed feeling of an angry customer or can at least sympathize to this. The premise of the novel explores this through the eyes of Tommy Thorpe who is a collections agent located in a Wisconsin call center. His sanity soon starts to fade after the numerous hateful, abusive calls he receives numerous times a day. The offensive comments, combined with a troubling financial situation and pressures mean that he has just about had enough and what happens next is truly shocking.

The premise of this novel is quite simply fantastic, I applaud Terrence Damon Spencer for writing a book about situations many workers experience. He takes reality but combines it with a fictional story and explores what those calls do to a person after repeated abuse. His exploration of this is sensational as well as explosive, and I think every reader will be able to love The REP because of the brilliant premise.

Terrence Damon Spencer is a genius, superb writer whose work genuinely shocked me as well as surprised me. As I read this book I sensed a feeling of suspense, the suspense is perfectly laced throughout The REP and although you know something terrible is going to happen, and trepidation is rife, you can’t help but turn the pages with haste, desperately wanting to know what is going to happen! Spencer makes sure that his readers are invested from very early on, and this is thanks to plot devices such as fast-paced chapters, characterization and brilliant themes. I found myself invested in the character of Tommy Thorpe very early on, I have never worked in retail or customer service so I cannot relate to his experiences but I do sympathize with them. I think it is easy for somebody to blame somebody and get angry at the person who works at customer services and I admit, I myself have been one of these people who has been frustrated with customer service, we have all been there but as I was writing, I sympathize with Tommy. Because I was so invested in Tommy from very early on, I was interested in his thought processes and what he was going to do. What unfolded with his narrative was truly shocking, and I applaud Spencer for writing such a gritty, compelling narrative.

As I am sure you lovely readers can tell, I adored The REP, and so I have no choice but to award The REP Five Stars! The premise of this book alone is enough to intrigue any reader, but the premise, combined with the exceptional plot and brilliant characterization and gritty crime, make The REP a stellar read that should not be missed!

Thank you so very much for the awesome review on my second novel “The REP”. It’s so nice to see and read such wonderful things about your hard work, it kinda brought a tear to my eye. Well, actually it brought tears lol. After working in the customer service field for many years and speaking with other representatives, we’ve always presented the question to each other after a hostile phone call. Why would you curse someone who has all of your information in front of them? What if that person was crazy enough to retaliate and use it? I thought… Read more »
