This little book is a compilation of poems (including some “prose poems”) composed by the author from 1953 to the present. They range from (it is to be hoped) amusing doggerel to serious reflection. They have been revised over the decades, but remain essentially as originally written. The author is a retired history professor with many novels and other works, professional or otherwise, to his credit.
As you readers know Karl Larew has become a favorite author of mine over the last year because his books are sensational and have managed to floor as well as entertain me. Each book I have read by Larew has been entirely different to the last but what has not changed is the phenomenal and high quality of writing so of course upon finish Larew’s previous book I was excited to get started and read another book by him! Karl Larew’s latest book is a poetry book, and when I knew of this I was thrilled and incredibly excited because Larew has once again shown me that he is a daring author who writes for passion and has decided to write a book in another genre and that to me is wonderful! I was excited to read Ready or Not because I wanted to know whether Larew could, in fact, charm me with his poetry and whether he has accomplished writing another extraordinary story.
The sad truth is, is that I do not read poetry books as much as I would like to but this is not my choice. The reason I have not read many poetry books recently is that the ones I have been finding seem to be generic and not original which is what I hate in any book, let alone a poetry book. If I read a poetry book, it has to be incredible and has to transfix me as well as charm me and make me feel a host of different emotions. That is why I am so happy to have discovered Ready or Not has to be one of the most original, unique and beautifully crafted poetry books I have ever had the pleasure of reading. If you are a reader who adores poetry and getting lost in moving poems then Ready or Not is the poetry book for you and should not be missed!
The poems courtesy of Larew is a unique collection and a vast collection because Larew in Ready or Not has complied poems he has written throughout roughly sixty years of his life and compiled them in this wonderful book for us readers. Throughout the book Larew has written poems around topics such as love, death, life, parenthood and even work (all major events in anybody’s life) and the result is profoundly moving.
The poems laced throughout Ready or Not are so brilliant and unique that I have not been able to stop thinking about them. As soon as I would finish one I would end up re-reading it because I wanted to immerse myself in it again and understanding the true meaning. I love immersing myself in a poem and reading it from different perspectives, and the wonderful author Karl Larew challenges his readers to do this.
Overall Ready or Not is a sensational, unique, and beautiful poetry book that should not be missed, so I, of course, have to award this stellar book five stars! So please, have a read of Ready or Not and get lost in the captivating words of Karl Larew and be compelled to read from the very beginning to the very end, you do not want to miss out!
