Growing Up Black in America

Don’t get me wrong here, I’ve had an amazing life, the last thing that I want anyone to think is that this book My Private Life is about sour grapes. I consider myself a true American red-blooded capitalist like all other good Americans. This book is about my experiences growing up, my experiences fighting back and growing up to become the best that I can be.

Growing up black in the South I felt that I had the cards stacked against me from the start, despite that I managed to get an education, join the United States Marine Corps and start a successful company. I’m not afraid of hard work either, I paid for tuition by picking up trash after school, delivered papers before school and then worked in a shipyard. I owned a boutique, ran and built a successful company from the ground up with my own blood, sweat, and tears.

There is a million different ways that my life could have turned out but I wouldn’t change it for anything. This is my story, My Private Life. I hope you enjoy reading my story as much as I enjoyed living it.

Memoirs are soon becoming my favorite books to read and this thought is enforced thanks to incredible, inspiring books such as this one – A Private Life: Growing Up Black in America. I read a lot of memoirs, hell, I read a lot in general but occasionally I will come across a book that strikes a chord with me. The story within the pages of this book courtesy of the inspirational Chase Hayes is an impeccable and one that I will not forget for a long time thanks to its gripping and captivating nature.

A Private Life: Growing Up Black in America is just what the title suggests… about a black man growing up in America. However, there is much more to this story than what appears on the surface; instead, it is a gripping, enlightening tale about one man’s courageous journey to make something of himself. Chase Hayes, the author of this book is an incredible man for what he has achieved so far in his life; his story begins with him growing up in the south of America and feeling as if the ‘cards (were) stacked up against (him).’ Despite Chase feeling this way, he managed to overcome the tribulations and prejudices he faced as a young man and was able to get an education as well as join the United States Marine Corps. Chase, however, wanted more and soon he built a company from scratch which turned out to be successful as well as profitable; Chase is a man who is not afraid to get his hands dirty and to work hard for what he wants in life and these two qualities are qualities everybody should aspire and try to have.

Chase Haye’s story is one that is incredibly inspiring; I adored how he poignantly and openly described his upbringing and how he felt being a black man growing up in America. It takes a lot for a person to write such things… to bare their soul to readers who he does not personally know so for this, I thank him for sharing his story and for being so open; there should be more people like this. The story of A Private Life is not only compelling as it raises peoples awareness to some real issues in this world, but it is also an inspirational book because it will inspire you to do better and be better and to finally achieve what you want to in life.

Chase Hayes is not only phenomenal but also a talented wordsmith as his memoir is beautifully written and flows flawlessly from beginning to end thanks to his moving literature. I admit, I adored everything about this book and I also adore the author for how courageous he is, besides, he is a former Marine! How can somebody not like him?

As I am a huge lover of this book and adore the wisdom and amount of inspiration laced throughout this book, I have no choice but to award this stunning piece of fiction a dazzling Five Stars!
