“Pieces That Fit is a powerful story based on one woman’s struggle to raise an autistic child. Karen’s raw, emotional candor will move you throughout your reading experience. Karen began this journey during Autism Awareness month in April 2014, when she wrote a post a day for thirty days. She received so much love, support, and encouragement from those posts that she is now sharing her journey, hoping to reach a bigger audience so that others may have a better understanding of their own journey and struggles.
She hopes this book will be a message of hope to others who have struggled or are struggling with this puzzling diagnosis. The book begins with Karen meeting her husband, Jim, in 1990 and moves on to the birth of their son, Chandler, who is afflicted with Asperger’s syndrome. Karen describes in detail her frustrations, anger, and bitterness through the ordeal of having Chandler diagnosed. She takes her readers through difficult situations, tantrums, and tears in a uniquely honest and moving way. From frustrating meetings with teachers to even worse day-care experiences, you will find yourself rooting for this boy and his family to succeed. In between, Karen and Jim have another child, Braeden, who couldn’t be more different than his big brother, and new challenges begin to emerge. With a new brother, however, successes begin to mount for Chandler. Finally, Karen brings us a message of hope as Chandler grows up and learns to live with the autistic traits that are uniquely his. As Chandler finally begins to succeed in school and in life, you will be cheering and fist-pumping in support of him.”
To come across a book such as Pieces That Fit is rare, it is rare because books that deal with the topic of Asperger’s Syndrome written by the parent are hard to come by so when I do come across such a book, I take the opportunity to read it and delve in. Pieces That Fit is just that, a rare book as it is written by the mother of a child who has Asperger’s Syndrome and the book, the incredible author Karen MacNeill poignantly describes what this entailed for her and how she coped.
Pieces That Fit is a sensational book that moved me on more than one occasion. It is no surprise that I adored this book, I myself am a mother and although I do not have a child that has Asperger’s Syndrome, I know many parents who do so to read a book such as this one is important as awareness needs to be spread and that is the key ethos of this book – to spread awareness and to share an experience in the hope of helping another family. Karen MacNeill is the narrator of her own story and in her book, she takes her readers on a moving and sometimes emotional journey as she navigates the tricky path to raise her autistic child. In Karen’s book, she is honest with her experiences and shares them with her readers, she describes the emotions she felt upon having her son diagnosed; feelings such as bitterness, frustration, and anger. Karen also takes her readers through the ups and downs of parenting and all the tears and tantrums she has had to face and lastly, Karen even expresses the difficulty in making her child’s school know about his condition and how they can help him.
As the reader follows Karen on her journey, the reader won’t be able to resist admitting Karen for her honesty. I am personally in awe of Karen and adore how she poignantly described the ups and downs of parenting. It is evident to the reader that Karen is a woman who cares deeply and in her writing, she expresses her thoughts and feelings through her words perfectly so that the reader is moved.
Karen MacNeill is not only an extraordinary woman who will be incredibly inspiring to many mothers out there, but she is also a fantastic writer who knows how to keep a reader entertained. With Karen’s book, I found myself turning the pages fast as I was desperate to know what Karen had to share as I became invested in her story from very early on. What I admire the most about Karen’s writing is how she was able to make a complicated topic, easily readable for readers who do not know specific terminologies or readers who do not even know exactly what Asperger’s Syndrome is. Karen wonderfully describes all about the syndrome so that readers can be better informed on the subject which is incredibly important and so I thank her.
