RED HEADED BOOK LOVER

Phoenix Down, Catherine Weaver

Fantasy, Literature & Fiction, Magic & Sword and Sorcery, Middle Grade Fiction, Teen & Young Adult

Alex is just settling in to a relaxing Spring Break when a leprechaun appears at her door and tells her to run. And she doesn’t stop running: from the police, the FBI, angry griffins, a powerful wizard, and her teachers – who happen to be Amazon warriors. ‘Detention’ has a far more serious meaning if all your teachers carry spears across their backs and know how to use them! Her Buddha-quoting grandmother and the leprechauns seem to have a plan to get her out of her mess, but the more she follows it, the worse things seem to get. The down of the phoenix just might help, but then again, if she uses it wrong she could rip apart the very fabric of existence.

A short while ago I read and reviewed an incredible book called Gold Dust which is written by the superb Catherine Weaver, and I admit I am obsessed with the book despite it being a middle grade/young adult novel! The story was enchanting and alit my mind with amazement thanks to the vivid descriptions and the astonishing, ever-expanding tale and land the reader encounters. Upon finishing Gold Dust, I immediately got started on book two in the series called Phoenix Down and this is the book I am reviewing today. Phoenix Down is a superb sequel, but before I expand on these thoughts and tell you about the story, I first want to inform you readers of the premise of the first book Gold Dust!

Gold Dust is a magical adventure tale packed full of action and creatures galore and follows the young protagonist of the story called Alex Lee; a freshman at the Palo Alto High in the Silicon Valley’. One day, on her way home from school Alex, is greeted by a Leprechaun and from this moment she is forced into a magical realm full of Griffins and magical forces.

In book two Phoenix Down the reader is once again reunited with Alex Lee and this time around she has changed… a lot! Alex in book two will continue her adventure in the magical realm the reader encounters in the first book but this time the stakes are even higher, and she must protect her family at all costs. Alex will have to ignite her inner fighting spirit and train as an Amazonian Warrior to help the ones she loves and this book lovers is the premise of Phoenix Down.

The premise of Phoenix Down is exciting and I am incredibly impressed by the excellent author’s expansion of the realm she had so flawlessly developed in book one. To be honest, I did not think that the realm could be expanded on anymore but gosh was I wrong because never before have I read of such excellent world development in a sequel. The scope of the story is excellent and grows bigger and bigger thanks to the inclusion of new characters, new events and new battles that need to be fought and magical powers to control and harness.

Catherine Weaver is the exceptional author of the book and the talented author who we have to thank for this gem of a book. I am impressed with not only Weaver’s ability to expand on the realm she had created in Gold Dust but also her ability to keep her readers hooked and guessing until the very end. I have read many sequels in which the book becomes predictable because the author has not refreshed the plot of the book but never is there an issue such as this in Phoenix Down because Weaver is continuously invigorating her plot and introducing new characters so that her readers are entertained from beginning to end.

Phoenix Down is an exceptional sequel that will quite simply blow you away and so I have no choice but to award this stunning book five stars! So please book lovers, have a read of Gold Dust as well as Phoenix Down because it is a series which can be enjoyed no matter your age as it is highly entertaining and thrilling so do not miss out!
